IB maths tutor in Dubai, online and 1-on-1

IB maths in Dubai is taught at more than forty IB schools, and the question parents bring us is rarely about the mathematics. It is about the system: why a child who gets everything right scores a 5 in MYP, which of the four Diploma courses to choose, what the internal assessment is for and how to score well on it, and why Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with one need different preparation. An IB maths tutor who has taught the IB system every week, and who holds a master's in mathematics, answers all of those in the first class.

Our IB maths classes are 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard and follow the school's unit plan. In MYP the work is on the four criteria, especially B (investigating patterns) and C (communicating), which decide most grades and which schools rarely have time to teach. In the Diploma the course is AA or AI at SL or HL as the school offers it: the syllabus a unit ahead of the class, the internal assessment planned from the first term of DP1, and Paper 1, Paper 2 and (for HL) Paper 3 practised separately to the IB markscheme from the second term. Every class is recorded, with notes and an assignment for the parent.

MYP to the Diploma

IB maths in Dubai, stage by stage

StageWhat is assessedWhat the class works on
MYP years 1 to 3 (ages 11 to 14)Criteria A (knowing and understanding), B (investigating patterns), C (communicating), D (applying in real-life contexts), each out of 8The content a unit ahead; criterion B investigations written up properly; the command terms the rubric uses
MYP years 4 and 5 (ages 14 to 16)The same four criteria at extended level; the eAssessment on-screen exam in year 5 at schools that sit itExtended-level content; the on-screen exam format; the choice between AA and AI for the Diploma made on evidence
Diploma: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA), SL and HLPaper 1 (no calculator), Paper 2 (calculator), Paper 3 (HL only); the internal assessment at 20%Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and proof; HL depth and the Paper 3 problem-solving style; the IA topic chosen and planned in DP1
Diploma: Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI), SL and HLPaper 1 and 2 (both with calculator), Paper 3 (HL only); the internal assessment at 20%Statistics, modelling, the calculator used well; interpreting results in words, which the markscheme credits; the IA built on real data

AA suits students heading for engineering, physical sciences, economics and mathematics; AI suits students heading for the social sciences, business, design and the life sciences, and uses the calculator throughout. HL in either is a large step up and most universities ask for it only for mathematics-heavy degrees. We advise on the choice in the free class, on the evidence of the child's MYP work.

how a class runs

πŸ“Š Sixty minutes, on a shared whiteboard

  • Five minutes: last week's work, marked to the IB criteria or markscheme
  • Ten minutes: the new idea in the school's order, a unit ahead where it can be
  • Thirty minutes: guided practice, the tutor watching every line; the command terms used
  • Ten minutes: an IB-style question under time, or the IA moved one step forward
  • After class: the recording, notes and the marked work to the parent

Knowledge base

Dubai families ask

1How much does an IB maths tutor cost in Dubai?
IB specialists in Dubai typically charge AED 150 to 300 an hour at home and AED 80 to 180 at a centre, because IB tutors are scarcer than CBSE or IGCSE ones. Our online 1-on-1 IB maths classes are about AED 37 to 48 an hour with a tutor who holds a master's in mathematics and has taught the IB system every week, with the recording and marked work included, billed monthly.
2Should my child take AA or AI, SL or HL?
AA for engineering, the physical sciences, economics and mathematics; AI for the social sciences, business, design and most life sciences. HL is a large step up in either and is needed only for mathematics-heavy degrees; a 6 at SL is worth more to a university than a 4 at HL. We advise in the free class on the evidence of the child's MYP work, not on ambition.
3My child gets the maths right and still scores low in MYP. Why?
Because MYP marks four criteria, and only criterion A is about getting the maths right. Criterion B (investigating patterns) and C (communicating) ask for a written investigation with conjectures, justification and the right command terms, and a child who has not been shown what a level-7 response looks like cannot produce one. Showing them, and practising the write-up, usually moves the grade within a term.
4Can you help with the internal assessment?
Yes, within the IB rules: we help the student choose a topic that can actually score, plan the mathematics, and understand the five criteria the IA is marked on, and we review drafts and point to what is missing. The work is the student's own; the tutor does not write any of it. The IA is 20% of the grade and the commonest place where able students lose marks, usually by choosing a topic that is too ambitious or too thin.
5What time are classes for families in Dubai?
The UAE is 1.5 hours behind India all year, so 4 to 7 pm in Dubai is 5:30 to 8:30 pm in Chandigarh: ordinary working hours for our tutors, with weekend mornings (Friday and Saturday in the UAE) as Indian late mornings. No midnight shifts, no tired tutor.
6How much does it cost?
About AED 37 to 48 an hour (US$10 to $13), for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included, billed monthly with no package and no contract. Dubai tuition centres publish AED 60 to 150 an hour for CBSE subjects and home tutors AED 100 to 250; the full comparison is on the pricing page.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard in maths or science, at your after-school time, in English, Hindi or Punjabi. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Do you follow the school's book or NCERT?
Both, in this order: the NCERT chapter the school is on, in the school's sequence, with the school's own worksheets and the CBSE sample-paper pattern from Class 9. Where the school runs ahead of NCERT (many Dubai schools do in maths), we follow the school.
