Coding classes for kids in Singapore, 1-on-1 and without the term fee

Singapore has more coding schools per child than almost anywhere: Coding Lab, the robotics academies, the holiday camps, the MOE Code for Fun programme in every primary school. What they share is the format, a group of six to ten around one instructor, sold by the term at Singapore prices. For a child who has finished Code for Fun and wants to write real programs, or for an O-level Computing student who needs the programming paper to come right, the group is the limit.

Our coding classes for kids in Singapore are one tutor with one child on a shared screen, at 4 to 7 pm Singapore time, which is an Indian afternoon, and on weekend mornings. Scratch from about 7, Python from about 10, web development, then the course the school sets: O-level Computing (7155) in Python with the lab-based paper, IGCSE and A-level Computer Science at the international schools, the IB Diploma course, and CBSE Class 11 and 12 Computer Science (Python) at GIIS, DPS and the other Indian international schools. Billed monthly in Singapore dollars, about S$13 to S$17 an hour, no term fee, with the recording and the code after every class.

Singapore's primary schools give every child Scratch through Code for Fun; secondary school offers Computing as an O-level subject in Python. Under 13 we follow the ladder; from Secondary 3 the O-level or the international school's course.

Singapore, in practice

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ What families in Singapore ask us

  • Scratch for a Primary 2 to 4 child after Code for Fun, 45 minutes twice a week, a game of their own by week 6
  • Python for a Primary 5 to Secondary 1 child, pictures first
  • O-level Computing (7155): the written paper from past papers, the lab-based paper in Python practised every week
  • IGCSE Computer Science and the IB Diploma course at the international schools
  • CBSE Class 11 and 12 Computer Science (Python) at the Indian international schools

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free

πŸ”’ Parents in the room, always

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours; parents can sit in on any class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; the code lives in the child's own account. Nothing is paid up front: the first class is free and you decide afterwards.

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1Do you teach O-level Computing?
Yes, on the 7155 syllabus: the written paper (computer architecture, networks, data, algorithms) from past papers and the mark scheme, and the lab-based paper in Python, which a shared-screen class practises in exactly the format the exam uses. From Secondary 3, one hour a week; two in the exam year.
2How do your classes compare with a coding school in Singapore?
The coding schools are good at the group experience and the competitions; the term fee buys a place in a class of six to ten. Ours is one child typing for most of the hour with a tutor reading every line, for about S$13 to S$17 an hour billed monthly. Many Singapore families use both: a holiday camp for the room, weekly 1-on-1 for the coding.
3What time are classes in Singapore?
4 to 7 pm Singapore time on school days, which is 1:30 to 4:30 pm in India, an easy afternoon for the tutor, and 7 pm after CCA and dinner; weekend mornings by arrangement.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
