Online coding classes for teens that end with something to show

A 13-year-old who has done a year of Scratch and a 16-year-old who has never coded need the same thing from a coding class, and it is not a course: it is a project they chose, a language that will still matter in five years, and a tutor who reads what they write. Group classes for teens tend to be either a repeat of the kids' course with harder graphics or a bootcamp written for adults; the teenager is bored by the first and lost by the second.

Our classes for teens start with Python, done properly: functions, lists and dictionaries, files, a program of a few hundred lines that does something the student wanted (a game, a bot, a data tool, an app for a club). From there the student chooses: web development and a published site; Java and AP Computer Science A for students in the US system, where the free-response patterns are drilled to the College Board rubric; AP CS Principles and its Create task; GCSE and A-level Computer Science on the UK boards; O-level Computing in Singapore; the AI course for students who want to train a model. Sixty minutes, one tutor, the student typing, the tutor reading every line, and by the end a portfolio of three or four finished things that a college application or a school project can point to.

The routes

Where a teenager can go from Python

Age and gradeLanguageWhat the child buildsWhy it is the right step
7 to 10 Β· Grades 2 to 5ScratchSprites that move and talk, a maze game, an animated story, a quiz with a scoreLogic (loops, events, conditions) without typing or syntax errors; a finished game every few weeks
10 to 13 Β· Grades 5 to 8PythonTurtle drawings, a number-guessing game, a quiz, a text adventure, small data toolsThe first typed language, taught slowly enough that the child can write a program alone
12 to 16 Β· Grades 7 to 11Web developmentA real website, published: HTML structure, CSS layout, JavaScript buttons and formsSomething to show, and the language of every app the child uses
14 to 18 Β· Grades 9 to 12Java and AP Computer Science AClasses and objects, arrays, recursion, the AP free-response patternsThe school CS course and the AP exam in May; the way universities teach
13 to 18 Β· Grades 8 to 12AI and machine learningWhat a model is, training one in Python on real data, the questions to ask of any AIBuilt on Python; a project the child can explain
15 to 18 Β· Grades 10 to 12AP Computer Science PrinciplesThe Create performance task and the five big ideasAP CSP, the gentler AP; counts for college credit

Every route starts with Python done properly, because every later language assumes the ideas Python teaches cleanly: functions, data structures, reading code. A student who starts at 13 reaches Java and AP CSA by 15 or 16; a student who starts at 16 reaches a strong Python portfolio and the AP CSP exam by 17.

πŸ“ What a teenager has by the end of a year

  • A Python program of a few hundred lines that does something they wanted
  • A published website with their name on it
  • For AP CSA students: twenty free-response questions written and scored to the rubric
  • For AP CSP students: the Create performance task finished early
  • A GitHub account with the code, which colleges and employers read

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free
safety and trust

πŸ”’ Parents in the room, always

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours; parents can sit in on any class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; the code lives in the child's own account. Nothing is paid up front: the first class is free and you decide afterwards.

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1My teenager has never coded. Is 15 or 16 too late to start?
No. A 16-year-old starting Python with no experience reaches a few-hundred-line program in about three months and a portfolio by the end of the year, and can take AP CS Principles the following May. What is too late is nothing; what is slow is starting in a group course that assumes nothing and then never speeds up.
2Do you teach AP Computer Science A to the exam?
Yes. AP CSA is Java, and the exam is decided on the free-response section, which is scored to a published rubric that credits specific things. We teach Java from the first class with the AP question styles in view, and from the second semester every class ends with a released free-response question written under time and scored to the rubric. The same for AP CSP, where the Create task is finished early and the written responses practised.
3What about GCSE or A-level Computer Science?
We teach both on the OCR and AQA specifications: the Python programming paper, the theory paper (data representation, networks, algorithms), and for A-level the project. The specification is the syllabus; the tutor works from the board's own past papers and mark schemes from the start of the course.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
