Coding classes for kids online in Australia, in the hours Australian families actually have

The Australian Curriculum puts coding into every child's school life: visual programming in Years 5 and 6, a general-purpose language (nearly always Python) from Years 7 and 8 in Digital Technologies, and the Year 11 and 12 computing courses in every state. The coding schools in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth sell term courses and holiday camps around that, in groups; for a child who wants to write real programs, or who is falling behind the school course, the group is the limit.

Our online coding classes for kids in Australia are one tutor with one child on a shared screen, after school in your state's time zone, which is late morning to afternoon in India and the easiest match our tutors have. Scratch from about 7, Python from about 10, web development, then Java and the state's senior course: Software Engineering and Enterprise Computing in NSW, Software Development and Applied Computing in Victoria, Digital Solutions in Queensland, Computer Science in WA, with the major project planned from the start. Billed monthly in Australian dollars, about A$14 to A$19 an hour, with the recording and the code after every class.

Australia's school order matches the ladder: visual programming to Year 6, Python from Year 7, a senior computing course by state. What the school cannot give is the hour of typing with someone reading every line, which is the class.

Australia, in practice

🦘 What families in Australia ask us

  • Scratch for a Year 2 to 4 child, 45 minutes twice a week, a game of their own by week 6
  • Python for a Year 5 to 7 child, a year ahead of Digital Technologies
  • The Year 11 and 12 computing course by state (NSW Software Engineering, VCE Software Development, QCE Digital Solutions, WACE Computer Science), with the major project
  • A January block in the long summer holiday
  • Coding and NAPLAN-year maths with the same family, different tutors

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free

πŸ”’ Parents in the room, always

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours; parents can sit in on any class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; the code lives in the child's own account. Nothing is paid up front: the first class is free and you decide afterwards.

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1Do you teach the Year 11 and 12 computing courses?
Yes, by state: Software Engineering and Enterprise Computing in NSW, Software Development and Applied Computing in Victoria, Digital Solutions in Queensland, Computer Science in WA, and the SACE and TCE courses. The language is whatever the school uses, usually Python; the major project is planned from the first term, because it is where the marks are.
2What time are classes in Australia?
After school in your state's time zone, 4 to 7 pm, which is late morning to early afternoon in India and the easiest match our tutors have; also before school and on weekend mornings. The city pages carry the planner.
3My child is doing Python at school and hates it. Can a tutor fix that?
Usually, and the reason is usually the same: the school moved to typed Python before loops and conditions were secure, so every lesson is syntax errors. Four to six weeks back in the ideas, with turtle graphics so every line draws something, and the child is writing programs they are pleased with.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
