Coding classes for kids online in Canada, from Toronto to Vancouver, in one format

Coding for kids in Canada is sold in two shapes: the after-school and holiday camps in Toronto, Mississauga, Calgary and Vancouver, which are good for enthusiasm and paid by the session, and the online group courses, which are the same tutor's screen and eight children in a video call. Neither has anyone reading the child's code between classes, and for a child in Winnipeg or Halifax the camps are a drive away anyway.

Our online coding classes for kids in Canada are one tutor with one child on a shared screen, at 7 am before school, after 4 pm and on weekend mornings in your time zone, Eastern to Pacific, which are Indian evenings and late evenings our tutors teach in shifts. Scratch from about 7, Python from about 10, web development, then Java and the course the school sets: in Ontario, ICS2O, ICS3U and ICS4U; AP Computer Science A and Principles where the school offers them; the BC, Alberta and Quebec computer science electives. Billed monthly in Canadian dollars, about C$14 to C$18 an hour, with the recording and the code after every class.

Canadian provinces introduce coding in the elementary curriculum (Ontario from Grade 1 in the maths strand, BC in Applied Design) and offer computer science as a high-school elective; the course codes differ by province, the languages do not. Under 13 we follow the ladder; from 13 the school's course.

Canada, in practice

🍁 What families in Canada ask us

  • Scratch for a Grade 2 to 4 child, 45 minutes twice a week, a game of their own by week 6
  • Python for a Grade 5 to 7 child, before the school's coding strand gets there
  • Ontario ICS3U and ICS4U (Grade 11 and 12 computer science), in Python or Java as the school teaches it
  • AP Computer Science A for students at schools that offer it, the free-response set scored to the rubric
  • A July and August block when school is out

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free

πŸ”’ Parents in the room, always

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours; parents can sit in on any class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; the code lives in the child's own account. Nothing is paid up front: the first class is free and you decide afterwards.

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1Do you teach the Ontario computer science courses?
Yes: ICS2O (Grade 10), ICS3U (Grade 11) and ICS4U (Grade 12), in whichever language the school uses, usually Python or Java, with the culminating project planned from the first term. For other provinces we teach the school's elective from its own course outline, and AP Computer Science where the school offers it.
2What time are classes in Canada?
7 am before school, after 4 pm, and Saturday and Sunday mornings in your time zone, Eastern to Pacific. The before-school slot is an Indian evening; the after-school slots are the early hours in India, which our tutors teach in shifts; weekend mornings are Indian evenings. Each city page has a planner that converts your time.
3Is the class the same from Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver?
Identical: the same tutor pool, the same price, the same hours in your own time zone. The city pages carry the planner and the local class times.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
