Coding classes for kids in Abu Dhabi that do not need a drive to Khalifa City or Al Reem

Abu Dhabi has fewer coding centres than Dubai and they are further apart: a family in Khalifa City, Al Reem, Mussafah or Al Raha is driving half an hour each way for a group class of eight, paid by the term. Many Abu Dhabi families we teach came to online coding for the drive alone, and stayed for the format: one tutor, one child, a shared screen, the child typing for most of the hour.

Our classes run at 4 to 7 pm Abu Dhabi time on school days and on Friday and Saturday mornings. Scratch from about 7, Python from about 10, web development, then Java and the Computer Science course the child's school uses: AP for the American schools, Cambridge IGCSE and A-level for the British schools, CBSE Class 11 and 12 Computer Science (Python) for Abu Dhabi Indian School, Sunrise, Bright Riders and the other Indian schools. Billed monthly in dirhams, the recording and the code after every class, parents welcome in every class.

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1How much do coding classes for kids cost in Abu Dhabi?
Centres sell by the term, in groups, with the fee paid up front; private tutors list AED 100 and more an hour. Our online 1-on-1 classes are about AED 37 to 48 an hour, billed monthly, no term fee, with the recording and the code after every class.
2Are there enough coding classes for kids in Abu Dhabi?
Fewer than Dubai, and they cluster in a few areas, which is why families in Khalifa City, Al Reem and Mussafah come to online classes. Online, the child gets one tutor to themselves and no drive; the centre's advantage, other children in the room, is better bought as a holiday camp than as a weekly class.
3Which school courses do you teach in Abu Dhabi?
AP Computer Science A and Principles for the American schools, Cambridge IGCSE (0478) and A-level (9618) Computer Science for the British schools, the IB Diploma Computer Science course, and CBSE Class 11 and 12 Computer Science (Python) for the Indian schools. Under 13 we follow our own ladder.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
