Coding, from India to the world

Why families abroad take coding classes for their kids from India

There are two honest reasons to take online coding classes for kids from India, and one honest risk. The reasons are the tutor and the price: India produces more programmers than any country except the US, a master's-qualified tutor who writes Python every week costs about US$10 to $13 an hour from here, and US and UK coding schools list the same hour at four to eight times that. The risk is the one every from-India subject has: a tutor teaching to an Indian syllabus when the child sits an American or British one.

Coding is the subject where that risk nearly disappears. Scratch, Python and Java are the same in every country; the AP Computer Science courses, GCSE Computer Science and O-level Computing are published syllabuses our tutors teach from the exam board's own documents; and the thing a parent cannot check at home, whether the child's code is good, is in the recording of every class. What a from-India coding tutor adds is the thing group classes cannot: one child typing for most of the hour with someone reading every line.

The ladder

What a child learns, from India, at each age

Age and gradeLanguageWhat the child buildsWhy it is the right step
7 to 10 Β· Grades 2 to 5ScratchSprites that move and talk, a maze game, an animated story, a quiz with a scoreLogic (loops, events, conditions) without typing or syntax errors; a finished game every few weeks
10 to 13 Β· Grades 5 to 8PythonTurtle drawings, a number-guessing game, a quiz, a text adventure, small data toolsThe first typed language, taught slowly enough that the child can write a program alone
12 to 16 Β· Grades 7 to 11Web developmentA real website, published: HTML structure, CSS layout, JavaScript buttons and formsSomething to show, and the language of every app the child uses
14 to 18 Β· Grades 9 to 12Java and AP Computer Science AClasses and objects, arrays, recursion, the AP free-response patternsThe school CS course and the AP exam in May; the way universities teach
13 to 18 Β· Grades 8 to 12AI and machine learningWhat a model is, training one in Python on real data, the questions to ask of any AIBuilt on Python; a project the child can explain
15 to 18 Β· Grades 10 to 12AP Computer Science PrinciplesThe Create performance task and the five big ideasAP CSP, the gentler AP; counts for college credit

The language is the same everywhere; the exam is not. From 13 we teach the child's own course where there is one: AP Computer Science A and Principles (US), GCSE and A-level Computer Science (UK), O-level Computing (Singapore), Digital Technologies (Australia), CBSE Class 11 and 12 Computer Science (Indian schools abroad).

πŸ”Ž Five checks for a coding tutor from India

  • Ask the tutor to build something small live in the trial class, and read the code in the recording afterwards
  • Ask which course your child's school uses (AP CSA, GCSE, O-level Computing) and listen for whether the tutor knows it
  • Count who types: the child should, for most of the hour
  • The same tutor every week, in writing
  • Monthly payment, no package paid up front

how a coding class runs

πŸ’» Sixty minutes, one child typing

  • Five minutes: last week's program, run together, bugs found aloud
  • Ten minutes: one new idea, shown on the shared screen with the tutor typing live
  • Thirty minutes: the child types, the tutor watches every line and stops the error where it happens
  • Ten minutes: the next piece of the project planned, in the child's words
  • After class: the recording, the code and a short note to the parent

For a child under 11 the class is 45 minutes. Parents are welcome in every class, and the code and the recording arrive after each one.

what the child needs

🧰 The checklist

  • A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and mouse (a tablet is fine for Scratch, not for Python)
  • Scratch 3 runs in the browser, free; Python 3 with Thonny or VS Code, free, installed together in the first class
  • A Google or Microsoft account for the shared screen
  • Forty-five minutes for a child under 11, sixty from about 11
  • Nothing paid up front: the first class is free

πŸ”’ Parents in the room, always

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours; parents can sit in on any class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; the code lives in the child's own account. Nothing is paid up front: the first class is free and you decide afterwards.

Knowledge base

Parents ask about coding classes

1Are coding classes from India good for a child in the USA or the UK?
For coding, yes, more clearly than for maths or English: the languages are identical everywhere, the exam syllabuses (AP Computer Science, GCSE Computer Science) are public documents our tutors teach from, and the child's code is visible in every recording. What to check is the same as for any tutor: who types, whether the tutor knows your child's course by name, and whether it is the same tutor every week.
2Will the time difference work?
It is the easiest part. US and Canadian families take 7 am before school, after 4 pm and weekend mornings, which are Indian evenings and late evenings our tutors teach in shifts; UK families 4 to 8 pm; Australian families after school, which is late morning in India; Gulf and Singapore families 4 to 7 pm, an ordinary Indian evening. The planner on each country page converts your time.
3Is the accent a problem for a young child?
Sit in on the free class and decide; it is free for that reason. In a coding class most of the communication is on the screen: the tutor types, the child types, the code speaks. Our tutors teach in clear, neutral English, and in Hindi or Punjabi where a family prefers it.
4What age should a child start coding classes?
About 7 for Scratch, where the logic is in blocks and nothing has to be typed; about 10 to 11 for Python, once the child can type a sentence without hunting for keys and reads instructions on a screen comfortably. A 13-year-old who has never coded starts in Python directly. The free class finds the right starting point in twenty minutes.
5Scratch or Python first?
Under 10, Scratch: the child learns loops, conditions, variables and events by building games, and syntax errors do not exist. From 10 or 11, Python, where the same ideas are typed. A child who has done a year of Scratch moves to Python in about six weeks because the ideas are already there.
6Why 1-on-1 rather than a group coding class?
Because coding is learned by typing, not by watching. In a group class of six to ten the tutor's screen does the coding and the children follow; the child who is stuck waits, and the child who is ahead waits too. In a 1-on-1 class the child types for most of the hour and the tutor reads every line as it is written, which is the only way to catch the habit behind the bug.
7Who teaches, and how do I know they can code?
Tutors with a master's degree who teach Python, Java and web development every week, the same tutor for your child all year, on a shared screen where you can see the code. Sit in on the free class, ask the tutor to build something small live, and read the code afterwards; it will be in the recording.
8What does my child need?
A laptop or desktop with a keyboard and a mouse. Scratch runs in the browser; Python and the editor are free and installed together in the first class. A tablet works for Scratch, not for typed languages.
9How much does it cost, and is the first class free?
The same hourly rate as every subject we teach: about US$10 to $13 an hour, in your currency, billed monthly, no package, with the recording and the code after every class. The first class is a free 30-minute lesson with you in the room; after it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide.
