The 11-plus, from India to the UK

Online 11-plus tuition for the test your target school uses

The 11-plus is the most expensive hour of tutoring in Britain for a nine-year-old, and the reason is timing, not difficulty: demand is concentrated into Years 4 and 5 and one test season. In London a specialist charges £40 to £90 an hour. The work itself is clear enough: Year 6 maths taught a year early, English comprehension, two kinds of reasoning, and practice under time.

Our 11-plus classes are 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard. We start by asking which schools you are applying to, because the test differs by area and by school, and we teach to that one. The class covers the maths a term ahead of school, then the question types of the reasoning papers one at a time, then timed sections. The child writes for most of the hour, and the parent gets the recording and the marked work.

Knowledge base

UK families ask

1Can an online tutor prepare a child for the 11-plus?
Yes. The test is paper-based or on screen, but the preparation is the same either way: Year 6 maths a year early, comprehension, the reasoning question types, and timed practice. All of that is done 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard, with the child writing for most of the hour. Parents can watch every class.
2When should 11-plus tuition start?
The start of Year 5 is enough for most children, at one hour a week, with a second hour from the summer term. Starting in Year 4 helps a child whose maths or reading is behind. Starting earlier than that mostly produces a tired child.
3Do you teach verbal and non-verbal reasoning?
Yes, both, by question type. There are a limited number of types in each paper; a child who can recognise the type on sight has the method ready. We teach each type until it is automatic and only then add the clock.
4Which test will my child sit?
It depends on the school and the area: most grammar school areas use GL Assessment papers, some schools set their own, and independent schools have their own entrance exams. The school's admissions page states the test and the subjects. Send us the list of target schools and we will check each one.
5What time are classes for UK families?
4 to 8 pm UK time on weekdays, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Britain is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 in winter, so UK after-school hours are Indian evenings; our tutors teach the later slots in shifts. The class time stays the same for you all year.
6How much does it cost?
About £8 to £10 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. A UK agency charges £25 to £60 for the same hour.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a UK after-school time. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
