GCSE English is the subject where able students lose marks most mysteriously. They read well, they write fluently, and they get a 5. The reason is that GCSE English is marked against assessment objectives, not against how good the writing seems: a reading answer earns marks for a specific kind of evidence and analysis, and a writing answer for structure, range and accuracy in fixed proportions. A student who has been shown the mark scheme writes to it; one who has not is guessing.
Our GCSE English tutors hold master's degrees in English and teach to one board per student. The class is 1-on-1 on a shared screen: one question type from the board's own papers, the mark scheme beside it, a timed answer, then marking line by line with the assessment objectives named. For Literature the set texts and the anthology poems are worked through with quotations learned by theme. Every class is recorded and the marked writing goes to the parent.
| Your time (UK) | Chandigarh | Who books it |
|---|---|---|
| 4:00 – 6:00 pm, after school | 8:30 – 10:30 pm (9:30 – 11:30 pm in winter) | Primary and KS3; the most popular slot |
| 6:00 – 8:00 pm | 10:30 pm – 12:30 am (11:30 pm – 1:30 am in winter) | GCSE and A-Level; our tutors teach these hours in shifts |
| Saturday and Sunday, 9 am – 1 pm | 1:30 – 5:30 pm (2:30 – 6:30 pm in winter) | Everyone; past-paper blocks before exams |
Britain is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 in winter; the class time stays the same for you, the tutor's shift moves. Each UK city page has a planner.
| Paper | What it examines | What the class works on |
|---|---|---|
| Language Paper 1 | Reading one fiction extract; writing a description or narrative | Reading questions by assessment objective; a timed piece of creative writing every fortnight, marked for structure, vocabulary and accuracy |
| Language Paper 2 | Reading two non-fiction texts, one older; writing to argue or persuade | Comparing viewpoints; the perspective question; a timed argument piece with a planned structure |
| Literature Paper 1 | Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel | Quotations by theme and character; the extract-to-whole-text answer; context used, not bolted on |
| Literature Paper 2 | The modern text, the poetry anthology, unseen poetry | Comparing two poems; the unseen poem in 45 minutes; the modern text's themes with quotations |
The content differs by board: the set texts, the anthology clusters and the question wording are the board's own, which is why we teach one board per student. Spelling, punctuation and grammar carry separate marks on the writing questions and on some Literature questions, and they are the cheapest marks to secure.
