A-level sciences, from India to the UK

Online A-level physics, chemistry and biology tuition

The A-level sciences are where a strong GCSE student first meets work that cannot be done on memory alone. Physics asks for problems to be set up from principles, chemistry for three different kinds of thinking in one course, and biology for a very large body of content written to an exact mark scheme. In each, the difference between a B and an A is rarely knowledge; it is how the answer is built.

Each of our A-level tutors holds a master's degree in the subject she teaches, and teaches one board per student. The class is 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard: the topic, worked problems where the tutor watches every line, then questions from the board's own papers marked against the published scheme. Predicted grades come from Year 12 results, so timed exam questions start in the first term.

A-level sciences we teach, by exam board

SubjectAQAEdexcelOCR AWhat the class works on
Physics74089PH0H556Setting up problems from principles; mechanics and electricity first; the maths, which is about 40 percent of the marks
Chemistry74059CH0H432The mole and calculations to automatic; organic mechanisms drawn, not memorised; exact wording
Biology74029BI0 or 9BN0H420Mark-scheme language; data and statistics questions; the extended response

Each subject is examined by written papers at the end of Year 13, with a separate practical endorsement reported as pass or fail. Questions on practical skills make up at least 15 percent of the written marks, and mathematical skills at least 40 percent in physics, 20 percent in chemistry and 10 percent in biology. The content is similar across boards; the order, the options and the mark schemes differ.

Knowledge base

UK families ask

1Can a tutor in India teach A-level physics, chemistry or biology for a UK board?
Yes, when the tutor teaches the board's specification and marks to its scheme. Our tutors hold master's degrees in their subject and work from AQA, Edexcel and OCR past papers every week. Ask for the board and the specification code in the first conversation; they are in the table above.
2Which A-level science is the hardest?
It depends on the student. Physics has the least content and the most mathematics, and is much easier alongside A-level maths. Chemistry mixes calculation, patterns and memory. Biology has the most content and the most exacting written answers. Students lose marks in physics by not being able to start, and in biology by not using the wording the mark scheme credits.
3My child got an 8 at GCSE and is struggling in Year 12. Is that normal?
Very common in the first term. GCSE rewards recall; A-level asks the student to apply ideas to unfamiliar situations and to calculate with them. Six to eight weeks of weekly 1-on-1 classes on exam-style questions, alongside the course, usually closes the gap.
4Do you help with the practical endorsement?
The practical work itself is done and assessed in school. We teach the practical questions in the written papers: planning, variables, uncertainties, graphs and evaluating a method, which are examined in the written papers and are a common source of lost marks.
5What time are classes for UK families?
4 to 8 pm UK time on weekdays, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Britain is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 in winter, so UK after-school hours are Indian evenings; our tutors teach the later slots in shifts. The class time stays the same for you all year.
6How much does it cost?
About £8 to £10 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. A UK agency charges £25 to £60 for the same hour.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a UK after-school time. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
