Key Stage 2 and 3, from India to the UK

Online tutoring for Years 3 to 9, on the National Curriculum

Most GCSE trouble starts years earlier, in two places. One is Years 4 to 6: times tables that never became automatic, and fractions that were learned as rules. The other is Years 7 to 9, when a child who managed primary school on memory meets algebra and nobody notices for a term because secondary school has ten teachers and no class teacher.

Our Key Stage 2 and 3 classes are 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard with the same tutor each week. We follow the school's scheme of work, a unit ahead where the child is secure and a unit behind where there is a gap. The class is a short recap, the new idea with diagrams, guided practice where the tutor watches each step, then a short task. Parents get the recording and a note after every class.

Year by year

What the school teaches, and what the class does

YearsWhat the school teachesWhat the class works on
3 and 4 (lower KS2)Place value, the four operations, times tables to 12 × 12 with the Multiplication Tables Check in June of Year 4, unit fractionsTables as patterns first and speed second; five timed minutes at the start of every class
5 and 6 (upper KS2)Fractions, decimals and percentages; ratio; long multiplication and division; early algebra; the Year 6 SATs in May (arithmetic, two reasoning papers, reading, grammar)Past SATs papers from the autumn of Year 6; fractions taught as one idea, not a set of rules
7 (KS3)Negative numbers, algebraic notation, equations, angles, the three sciences as separate subjects in many schoolsThe move from arithmetic to algebra: one step per line, every answer checked
8 (KS3)Linear graphs, ratio and proportion, probability, forces, the periodic table, cellsA unit ahead of the class; the science calculations with units
9 (KS3)Simultaneous equations, Pythagoras and trigonometry, GCSE content starting in many schoolsThe gaps that decide the GCSE tier, found and closed before Year 10

Scottish families: P4 to S3 on Curriculum for Excellence follow the same pattern, in the Scottish order. English reading and writing are taught the same way: a text with questions, one skill, a short piece of writing marked before the next class.

Knowledge base

UK families ask

1Does my primary school child really need a tutor?
Often not. A tutor helps when there is a specific gap the child cannot close alone: times tables that will not stick, fractions, reading comprehension, or a move between schools. If the homework is being done and is mostly right, ten minutes a day with a parent does more than an hour a week with anyone. We say so in the free class if that is the case.
2Do you prepare for the Year 6 SATs?
Yes: the arithmetic paper, the two reasoning papers, and reading and grammar, from past papers from the autumn term of Year 6. The aim is that nothing in the papers is a surprise; the results matter mostly because secondary schools use them to set Year 7 classes.
3What changes in Key Stage 3?
Maths becomes algebra, science splits into three subjects with calculations, and there is no class teacher watching the whole child. A term of weekly 1-on-1 classes at the start of Year 7 is the cheapest insurance against a gap nobody notices until Year 9.
4Do you teach science and English as well as maths?
Yes. Science from Year 5 with the working-scientifically skills, and the three sciences separately from Year 7. English reading comprehension, grammar and writing from Year 3, with a short written task marked after every class.
5What time are classes for UK families?
4 to 8 pm UK time on weekdays, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Britain is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 in winter, so UK after-school hours are Indian evenings; our tutors teach the later slots in shifts. The class time stays the same for you all year.
6How much does it cost?
About £8 to £10 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. A UK agency charges £25 to £60 for the same hour.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a UK after-school time. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
