GCSE maths, from India to the UK

Online GCSE maths tuition, on your board and your tier

GCSE maths is the one grade every sixth form, college and employer asks for, and it is the subject where a tutor makes the most measurable difference, because the marks are in the method. A student who knows the maths but sets it out carelessly loses a grade; a student who is taught how the mark scheme awards each line gains one.

Our GCSE maths tutors hold a master's degree in mathematics and teach to one board per student. The class is 1-on-1 on a shared whiteboard: a past-paper question attempted alone, marked aloud against the published mark scheme with each method mark shown, the gap behind any lost mark taught, then a similar question straight away. Every class is recorded and the marked work goes to the parent.

What is examined

GCSE maths: the six areas, and what the class does with each

AreaWhat it includesWhere marks are usually lost
NumberFractions, decimals, percentages, standard form, surds and indices on HigherPercentage change in reverse; non-calculator fraction work
AlgebraExpressions, equations, sequences, graphs, quadratics; functions and algebraic proof on HigherThe largest share of the Higher paper: rearranging, and quadratics by three methods
Ratio, proportion and rates of changeRatio, direct and inverse proportion, compound measures, growth and decayMulti-step word problems where the ratio is hidden
Geometry and measuresAngles, area and volume, Pythagoras, trigonometry, circle theorems and vectors on HigherReasons not written in angle questions; exact trigonometric values
ProbabilityTree diagrams, Venn diagrams, conditional probability on HigherWithout replacement; reading the question
StatisticsAverages, charts, scatter graphs, cumulative frequency and histograms on HigherHistograms; describing a correlation in context

All three boards set three papers of one hour thirty minutes at the end of Year 11, and the content is the same nationally; the question style and the mark schemes differ. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5 and Higher awards 4 to 9. Students who do not reach grade 4 continue maths after 16 and can resit in November or the following summer.

🗓 When to start, and what happens when

  • Year 10, autumn: a full diagnostic paper; Key Stage 3 gaps found and closed
  • Year 10, summer: the school's exams decide the tier; a marked Higher paper is the evidence if your child is on the border
  • Year 11, November or December: mocks on full past papers
  • Year 11, January to April: one full paper a fortnight, marked and reworked
  • May and June: three papers. Resit students: a twelve-week plan to the November series

UK families ask

1How much does a GCSE maths tutor cost?
In the UK, typically £30 to £60 an hour for a qualified teacher, and £15 to £30 for a university student. With us it is about £8 to £10 an hour for a 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, with the recording and marked work included and no contract.
2Can an online tutor from India teach GCSE maths properly?
Yes, when the tutor teaches to the UK board's specification and marks to its scheme. The maths itself is the same everywhere; what is specific to GCSE is how answers are set out and credited. Our tutors work from AQA, Edexcel and OCR past papers every week. Ask any tutor to name your child's board, specification code and tier before you ask the price.
3Foundation or Higher: which tier should my child sit?
Higher if they are working securely at grade 5 or above, because Foundation is capped at grade 5. A student aiming for grade 4 or 5 is often safer on Foundation, where the questions are more accessible. The school decides, usually from Year 10 exams and Year 11 mocks, and a marked past paper on each tier is the best evidence for the decision.
4My child needs to resit GCSE maths. Can you help?
Yes. We start with a full past paper to see where the marks went, then work on the highest-value topics for the grade 4 boundary: number, ratio, basic algebra and the common geometry questions. Twelve weeks of two classes a week is the usual plan for the November resit.
5What time are classes for UK families?
4 to 8 pm UK time on weekdays, and Saturday and Sunday mornings. Britain is 4.5 hours behind India in summer and 5.5 in winter, so UK after-school hours are Indian evenings; our tutors teach the later slots in shifts. The class time stays the same for you all year.
6How much does it cost?
About £8 to £10 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. A UK agency charges £25 to £60 for the same hour.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a UK after-school time. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
