Marketplace platforms publish their own London averages, which sit around £25 to £35 an hour for GCSE maths and £30 to £45 for A-level; the platform keeps 15 to 35 per cent, so the same tutor is cheaper on their own website.

The 11-plus is the London anomaly: an hour for a nine-year-old that costs more than an hour of A-level, because the demand is concentrated into two year groups and one test season.

Why the India-based class is £8 to £10
Because the tutor lives in India, where a master's-qualified teacher's hour costs a fraction of a London hour, and because there is no agency between you. The five checks before paying, at any price
- The board and specification, by name (AQA 8300, Edexcel 1MA1, OCR J560; for A-level, Edexcel, AQA, OCR or MEI). A tutor who says "GCSE maths" and cannot name the board will teach the wrong paper.
- A degree in mathematics, shown to you.
- A marked script from a current student, with the marks on it.
- The same tutor to the exam.
- Monthly payment, no term package.
Then take two trial classes in the same week, one local and one online, same child, same topic, and watch both. Pay for one month with the tutor the child worked hardest for.
