Online physics tutoring for students who understand the lesson and lose the test

Physics has fewer facts than any other school subject and the most thinking, and that is why conscientious students fail it: the method that worked in biology and chemistry, learn it and recall it, does nothing in a subject with five principles and a hundred situations. What physics needs is a method, draw before you calculate, choose the principle before the formula, attempt before you look, and someone reading the diagrams and the working to say which of four kinds of mistake the student makes. That is what an online physics tutor with a master's in physics does, 1-on-1, every week.

The first class is a diagnosis from a marked test: every lost mark sorted into wrong principle, no diagram, math, or units and sign. Then the course runs with the school or college, a week ahead where it can: each principle learned as a sentence the student can say, every problem drawn on the shared whiteboard before an equation is written, and for AP students released free-response questions scored to the College Board rubric, which credits explanation in words. Every class is recorded, with notes, an assignment and the error log kept between classes.

What we teach

Physics courses, and where each one is lost

CourseMath usedWhere students fallWhat the class does about it
Regular high school physicsAlgebra 1, basic trigonometryRearranging formulas; units; reading the questionTen minutes of algebra a week, separate from physics; the unit on every line
Honors physicsAlgebra 2, trigonometryChoosing the principle; multi-step problemsThe principles as sentences; the diagram first, every time
AP Physics 1Algebra and trigonometryExplaining in words; experimental design; justification on the free responseReleased FRQs scored to the rubric from the first semester; paragraph-length answers practised
AP Physics 2Algebra and trigonometryFields, circuits and optics, which are less intuitive than mechanicsEach new topic tied back to the mechanics method; ray and field diagrams drawn until automatic
AP Physics C: Mechanics; Electricity and MagnetismCalculusSetting up integrals; E and MThe calculus taught alongside where the school's math course is behind; the integral set up from the diagram
College physics, algebra-basedAlgebra and trigonometryPace: a year of high school physics in a semesterTwo hours a week at the pace of the course; the weekly problem set read line by line
College physics, calculus-basedCalculus 1 and 2 alongsideKeeping up with the calculus; the second semesterCalculus and physics taught by the same tutor where needed; the error log sorted into physics, calculus and algebra
IGCSE, A-level, IB and CBSE Class 11 and 12 physicsBy boardThe board's own question style; the six-mark explanations; numericalsThe board's past papers and mark scheme from the start of each unit

Every course in the table starts with mechanics and everything after is built on it, so a student who joins us in the mechanics unit, with the principles understood rather than the examples memorised, finds electricity, waves and the rest harder in content but easier in method. A student arriving mid-year gets the mechanics check first.

before you hire anyone

๐Ÿ”Ž Five checks for any online physics tutor

  • Ask the tutor to name your student's course and its next unit, and listen for whether they know what is in it
  • A degree in physics, shown to you; a math or engineering tutor is not the same thing for the explanation questions
  • A marked AP Physics free-response answer, scored to the rubric, from a current student
  • The same tutor every week, in writing
  • Monthly payment, no package paid up front

Knowledge base

US families ask

1How is an online physics tutor better than the physics teacher my student already has?
Not better; different. A teacher explains physics to thirty students and sees their final answers. A 1-on-1 tutor on a shared whiteboard sees the diagram the student drew, or did not draw, and every line of the working, and can say which of four kinds of mistake the student makes: wrong principle, no diagram, math, or units and sign. Most students make one kind nearly every time, and once it is named, it is fixed in two or three weeks.
2Do you teach AP Physics 1 to the exam?
Yes, and it is the course most families come to us for, because its free-response section asks students to explain and justify in words and diagrams, which schools rarely have time to practise. We use released free-response questions scored to the College Board rubric from the first semester, so the student learns what a full-credit answer contains. The same approach for AP Physics 2 and for AP Physics C, where the calculus is taught alongside if the school's math course is behind.
3My student is in college physics and the course moves too fast. Can you keep up?
Yes. College physics is a year of high school physics in a semester, and most students who struggle are not behind in physics but behind in the volume of problems. We meet one or two hours a week at the pace of the course, read the week's problem set line by line, and keep the error log sorted into physics, calculus and algebra so the practice goes where the marks are lost. For calculus-based physics the same tutor can teach the calculus where needed.
4What if the problem is really math, not physics?
It usually is, in part. The math in physics is a level below the student's math class, but it has to be automatic, and if rearranging a three-symbol formula takes thought there is no attention left for the physics. The first class finds this out. Where it is the case, ten minutes of algebra a week, separate from physics, fixes it within a month, and the physics improves with it.
5What time are classes for US families?
The most popular slot is 7 to 8:30 am US Eastern before school, which is early evening in India. US after-school (4 to 8 pm Eastern) is the early hours in India, and our tutors teach those hours in shifts, so evening slots exist on every weekday. Saturday and Sunday mornings US time are Indian evenings. Central, Mountain and Pacific families get the same three windows, shifted.
6How much does it cost?
US$10 to $13 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. The full table, in US and Canadian dollars, is on the pricing page.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a time in your time zone. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
