CBSE online tuition for NRI children in the United States

CBSE-affiliated schools outside India are concentrated in the Gulf, so in the United States almost every NRI child is in an American school. That works well until the family decides to move back, usually with a few months' notice, and the child has to join a CBSE class mid-stream: a different order of topics, a different style of question, a second language, and from Class 9 a syllabus that leads to a board exam.

This is the tuition for that situation. One tutor in India with one child in the USA, teaching CBSE maths and science from the NCERT books, chapter by chapter, at a pace that fits beside the American school year: usually one or two classes a week, on weekend mornings US time or at 7 am before school. Families who are not moving back use the same classes to keep the child's maths at an Indian standard.

US grade to CBSE class, and what is different

US grade (age)CBSE classWhat CBSE has covered that the US grade usually has not
Grade 5 (10 to 11)Class 5Faster written arithmetic: long multiplication and division, fractions and decimals without a calculator
Grade 6 (11 to 12)Class 6Integers, basic algebra and geometry constructions; science as a separate subject with diagrams
Grade 7 (12 to 13)Class 7Rational numbers, simple equations, percentages and simple interest; physics, chemistry and biology chapters each year
Grade 8 (13 to 14)Class 8Linear equations, exponents, factorisation, mensuration; the foundation Class 9 assumes
Grade 9 (14 to 15)Class 9Polynomials, coordinate geometry, Euclidean proof, Heron's formula; physics with numericals; the two-year board syllabus begins
Grade 10 (15 to 16)Class 10The board exam year: quadratic equations, trigonometry, statistics; chemistry equations and physics numericals to the CBSE marking scheme
Grades 11 and 12Class 11 and 12Stream choice (science, commerce, humanities); calculus from Class 11; the Class 12 board

Schools in India place a returning child by age and by an entrance test in maths, science and English. A child joining in Class 9 or later should plan a full year ahead, because the Class 10 board is built on the Class 9 syllabus.

  • 12 months before: start CBSE maths and science once a week, from the class the child would join
  • 9 months before: ask the target school for its entrance test pattern and the second-language rule
  • 6 months before: add Hindi or the school's second language if the child cannot read and write it
  • 3 months before: two classes a week, sample papers in the CBSE format

Knowledge base

US families ask

1Is CBSE online tuition available for students in the USA?
Yes. We teach CBSE maths and science 1-on-1 from India to children living in the United States, from the NCERT books, Class 3 to Class 12. Most families take one or two classes a week on weekend mornings US time or at 7 am before school, alongside the American school year.
2We are moving back to India. Which class will my child join?
Schools place by age and by an entrance test, usually in maths, science and English, and from Class 9 the timing matters because Class 9 and 10 are one two-year board syllabus. As a guide, US Grade 6 maps to Class 6 and so on. The gaps are in topic order and question style rather than ability; a year of weekly CBSE classes before the move closes them.
3Can my child do the American school year and CBSE at the same time?
Yes, at one class a week for most children up to Grade 8, because the content overlaps heavily and CBSE mainly adds written practice. From Grade 9 it needs two classes a week and a decision on which system the child will finish school in.
4Do you teach Hindi for children returning to India?
Yes. CBSE schools require a second language up to Class 8 and most up to Class 10, and it is usually the hardest part of the return for a child raised in the USA. We teach reading and writing Hindi or Punjabi from the alphabet, 1-on-1.
5What time are classes for US families?
The most popular slot is 7 to 8:30 am US Eastern before school, which is early evening in India. US after-school (4 to 8 pm Eastern) is the early hours in India, and our tutors teach those hours in shifts, so evening slots exist on every weekday. Saturday and Sunday mornings US time are Indian evenings. Central, Mountain and Pacific families get the same three windows, shifted.
6How much does it cost?
US$10 to $13 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. The full table, in US and Canadian dollars, is on the pricing page.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a time in your time zone. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
