Math, from India to the USA

Online math tutors from India for American students, 1-on-1

Parents in the USA look for math tutors from India for two reasons: the depth of practice Indian teachers bring, and the price. Both are real. The risk is also real: a tutor who teaches Indian methods and Indian notation to a child who will be tested on Common Core, a state test or the SAT. A method that is correct and unfamiliar to the teacher's rubric loses marks.

Our math tutors each hold a master's degree in mathematics and teach the American sequence in the American order: Common Core from Grade 1, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics. Every class is one tutor with one child on a shared whiteboard: a short recap, the new idea, guided practice where the tutor watches every line, then notes, an assignment and the recording for the parent. It is the same tutor every week, which is what makes a tutor useful by March.

A child arriving from an Indian school is usually a course ahead in computation and a course behind in the vocabulary of American word problems; we check both in the first class and start where the gap is.

Knowledge base

US families ask

1Are math tutors from India good for American school math?
They are when they teach the American order and vocabulary, which ours do: Common Core from Grade 1, the state test formats, then Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and AP. What an Indian math teacher adds is depth of practice and master's-level subject knowledge. What to avoid is a tutor who teaches Indian shortcuts to an American test; ask the tutor to name your child's course and what follows it.
2How do I find the best online math tutor from India?
Use five checks. The tutor names your child's American course and the one after it. The tutor shows a degree in mathematics. You see a marked test or worksheet from a current student. It is the same tutor every week, not a pool. You pay monthly, not for a package. Then take a free trial class and watch whether your child writes for most of it; a class where the tutor talks and the child nods is not tutoring.
3Which grades and courses do your math tutors cover?
Kindergarten to Grade 12: elementary Common Core math, Math 6 to 8, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, and SAT and ACT math. Also the competition track (AMC 8, Kangaroo) for children who need a harder stretch once the school work is secure.
4My child is ahead in math. Can the tutor accelerate?
Yes, once the current course is secure. The usual route is Algebra 1 in 8th grade, which reaches calculus by 12th; we check five readiness skills first (fractions, negative numbers, proportional reasoning, two-step equations, turning a sentence into an expression) and prepare the school's placement test.
5What time are classes for US families?
The most popular slot is 7 to 8:30 am US Eastern before school, which is early evening in India. US after-school (4 to 8 pm Eastern) is the early hours in India, and our tutors teach those hours in shifts, so evening slots exist on every weekday. Saturday and Sunday mornings US time are Indian evenings. Central, Mountain and Pacific families get the same three windows, shifted.
6How much does it cost?
US$10 to $13 an hour for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, the same one every week, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included. Billed monthly, no package, no contract. The full table, in US and Canadian dollars, is on the pricing page.
7Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a time in your time zone. Parents sit in. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
8Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Parents are welcome in every class, every class is recorded and the recording is yours, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class.
