Chemistry is hard in five particular ways, and most students have two of them: it is three subjects in one, it happens at a scale you cannot see, the maths arrives in the middle of a descriptive course, the vocabulary is larger than in any other science, and everything from the mole onward depends on everything before. A classroom cannot find out which two a student has. An online chemistry tutor with a master's in chemistry, reading the student's answers 1-on-1, can, and then teaches that.
The first class is a diagnosis from a marked test: every lost mark sorted into maths, explanation, vocabulary, or a topic that assumed something earlier. The mole is checked with three questions, and rebuilt if it needs rebuilding, whatever year the student is in, because every later chapter depends on it. Then the course runs with the school or college: particles drawn for every reaction until the picture is there, the maths named and practised separately, a definitions page per topic tested by recall, and for AP students released free-response questions scored to the College Board rubric, which credits particle-level explanation and nothing else. Every class is recorded, with notes, an assignment and the error log kept between classes.

| Course | What it covers | Where students fall | What the class does about it |
|---|---|---|---|
| High school chemistry | Atoms, the periodic table, bonding, the mole, reactions, solutions, gases, acids and bases | The mole and stoichiometry; the first explanation questions | The mole made automatic in the first month; particles drawn for every reaction |
| Honors chemistry | The same, deeper, with more calculation | Equilibrium; the maths inside | Ratios, rearranging and logarithms practised separately, ten minutes a week |
| AP Chemistry | A college year in a school year: units 1 to 9, with units 7 and 8 (equilibrium, acids and bases) deciding most scores | Equilibrium and acids and bases; the free-response wording; the labs | Stoichiometry automatic early; logarithms before unit 8; released FRQs scored to the rubric from the first semester |
| College general chemistry | Two semesters at pace, assuming the mole and the particle picture | Pace; the assumed foundations | Two hours a week at the pace of the course; the weekly problem set read line by line |
| College organic chemistry | Functional groups, mechanisms, synthesis, spectroscopy | Mechanisms as a new way of thinking; memorising instead of seeing patterns | Mechanisms drawn until the patterns show; the electron-pushing rules as one page |
| IGCSE, A-level, IB and CBSE Class 11 and 12 chemistry | By board | The six-mark explanations; organic in Class 12; the internal assessment | The board's past papers and mark scheme from the start of each unit |
Chemistry is three subjects: physical (maths and models), organic (patterns and mechanisms) and inorganic (facts organised by the periodic table). A student is rarely weak in all three, and the first class finds out which one it is, because each is taught in its own way.
