"AP score calculator" is one search for nine different exams, and the arithmetic is different on each: the section weights, the number of multiple-choice questions and the free-response point values are published by the College Board and change with the format revisions (Calculus, Physics 1 and Statistics all change for May 2027). This page is the master table, with a calculator page for each exam, the estimated cut points, and the real May 2025 distributions, which say more about what a 5 takes than any estimate.

MC is multiple choice and FRQ is free response; the share of the score in brackets. The composite is each section's percentage times its share, added. The cut points are estimates from released curves; the College Board sets them after each exam and does not publish them, and they move by a few points a year. The 2025 figures are the College Board's own.

How the College Board scores an AP exam

  1. Section I is machine-scored: one point per correct answer, no penalty for a wrong one, so every question is answered.
  2. Section II is scored by readers at the June reading with the scoring guidelines, question by question: each point is a specific thing (a thesis, a labelled axis, a justified prediction, a set-up written before the number), and the readers award them independently.
  3. The composite weights the two sections to their published shares (half and half on most exams, 45 to 55 on the two English exams, where the essays count more).
  4. The cut points are set after each administration by the development committee with the chief reader, using the exam's statistics and the standard of previous years, so that a 5 means the same thing in 2027 as in 2025. They are not released, which is why every calculator estimates.
  5. Scores are released in early July. Colleges set their own credit policies by score; the College Board's credit policy search lists them.

What the 2025 distributions say

The share of students at each score is the honest answer to "what does a 5 take": it is the top 44.0 percent of Calculus BC students, the top 13.4 percent of English Language students. The three exams with the widest spread are Statistics (17.0 percent at 5, 23.7 percent at 1), Physics 1 (19.8 and 19.2) and Calculus AB (20.3 and 13.0), which are the exams where the free response is scored strictly on method and reasoning; the three with the narrowest are Chemistry (6.2 percent at 1), English Language (9.7) and English Literature (10.0).

Questions parents ask

1How is an AP score calculated?
Every AP exam has a multiple-choice section and a free-response section. The College Board converts each to its published share of the score (half and half on most exams; 45 and 55 percent on English Language and Literature), adds them to a composite, and converts the composite to a 1 to 5 with cut points it sets after each exam so the standard stays constant between years. The cut points are not published; calculators estimate them from released curves, and on most exams about 65 to 72 percent of the composite is a 5, 53 to 61 percent a 4 and 40 to 48 percent a 3.
2What percentage do you need for a 5 on an AP exam?
It depends on the exam: about 61 percent of the composite on Calculus BC, 64 on Calculus AB, 67 on Biology and Physics 1, 70 on Statistics and English Literature, 71 on US Government, 72 on Chemistry and English Language, all estimates from released curves. The real guide is the share of students who scored a 5 in 2025: 44.0 percent on Calculus BC, 23.7 on US Government, 20.3 on Calculus AB, 19.8 on Physics 1, 18.9 on Biology, 17.9 on Chemistry, 17.0 on Statistics, 16.2 on English Literature and 13.4 on English Language.
3Which AP exams changed format in 2027?
Calculus AB and BC go from 45 to 42 multiple-choice questions (29 without a calculator in 62 minutes, 13 with one in 38 minutes) and run 3 hours 10 minutes. Physics 1 goes from 40 to 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes with 95 minutes for the free response. Statistics is revised for the 2026-27 year: 42 multiple-choice questions and four 10-point free-response questions in place of 40 and six 4-point questions. The free-response point values on the other exams are unchanged.
4Are online AP score calculators accurate?
They all use the College Board's published arithmetic, so they agree with each other on the composite; they differ on the estimated cut points by a few points, which is the real uncertainty. Near a boundary, a practice composite within three points could land on either side on the real exam. Use the calculator to find the section where points are cheapest, not to predict the number.
