"AP World History Score Calculator" is searched after every practice exam and in the week after the real one, by students who want to turn a raw score into the 1 to 5. The arithmetic is published by the College Board and is on this page with a calculator; the only unknown is where the cut points fall, which the College Board sets after each exam and does not publish, so every calculator, this one included, uses estimates from released curves and says so. This page has the May 2027 format, the calculator, the estimated conversion table with raw-score examples, the May 2025 results, the free-response point values from the scoring guidelines, where the points are lost, and a printable worksheet.

How the exam is scored

Section Questions Time Share of the score Points
I: multiple choice 55 55 minutes 40% 55, one each; no penalty for wrong answers
II: free response 5 40 minutes for the short answers, then 1 hour 40 minutes for the DBQ (60 minutes recommended, with a 15-minute reading period) and the long essay (40 minutes) 60% 22: short answer 1 (secondary source) 3 (6.667% of the score); short answer 2 (primary source) 3 (6.667% of the score); short answer 3 (non-text source) 3 (6.667% of the score); document-based question 7 (25% of the score); long essay 6 (15% of the score)
Total 3 hours 15 minutes 100% composite as a percentage

Section I. Sets of three or four questions on a shared stimulus, covering 1200 to the present; 40 percent of the score.

Section II. Three short-answer questions worth 3 points each (20 percent of the score together), a document-based question worth 7 points (25 percent) and a long essay worth 6 points (15 percent), the values in the College Board's 2025 scoring statistics. The calculator weights each question separately.

The composite. The College Board converts each section to its share of the score (40 percent for the multiple choice, 60 for the free response) and adds them; the composite is then converted to a 1 to 5 with cut points set after the exam so that the standard stays constant from year to year. The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, 3 hours 15 minutes in total, on Thursday 6 May 2027.

The calculator

Enter the multiple choice correct and the points on each free-response question from a practice paper marked to the scoring guidelines (be strict: a reader is).

AP World History: Modern score calculator (May 2027 format; estimated cut points)

Composite = 40% x (multiple choice correct / 55) + 6.667% x (short answer 1 (secondary source) / 3) + 6.667% x (short answer 2 (primary source) / 3) + 6.667% x (short answer 3 (non-text source) / 3) + 25% x (document-based question / 7) + 15% x (long essay / 6). The 1 to 5 is read from estimated cut points (70%, 57%, 44% and 33% of the composite for a 5, 4, 3 and 2), which are estimates from released curves; the College Board sets the real cut points after each exam and does not publish them. A composite within three points of a cut is on the line. No penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.

The conversion table (estimates)

AP score Composite (estimate) For example What it means
5 70% and up 38 of 55 multiple choice and 15 of 22 free response Extremely well qualified
4 57% to 69% 31 of 55 multiple choice and 13 of 22 free response Well qualified
3 44% to 56% 24 of 55 multiple choice and 10 of 22 free response Qualified
2 33% to 43% 18 of 55 multiple choice and 7 of 22 free response Possibly qualified
1 under 33% No recommendation

The raw-score examples assume the same percentage in both sections; any mix that gives the composite works. These cut points are estimates from the released curves of past years. The College Board sets them after each administration and they move by a few points; a practice composite within three points of a boundary is on it, not over it.

A worked example. 41 of 55 multiple choice right and free-response scores of 2, 2, 2, 5, 4 (15 of 22): composite 71.0 percent, which is a 5 on the table, with little margin: a composite within three points of a cut is on the line, and one more free-response point on two questions is the safe side.

The May 2025 results

Score 5 4 3 2 1 3 or higher Mean
Share of 411,547 students 13.9% 33.4% 17.0% 26.5% 9.2% 64.3% 3.16

From the College Board's student score distributions for the May 2025 exams. The share at each score is the real guide to the cut points: a 5 in World History is the top 13.9 percent of the students who sat it, whatever the raw score that took.

What the free-response questions ask

  • Short answers (3 points each): identify, explain and explain on a secondary source, a primary source and a non-text source from 1200 to 2001; one specific example per part
  • Document-based question (7 points): thesis, contextualisation, evidence from at least four of the seven documents, outside evidence, sourcing for at least two documents, complexity
  • Long essay (6 points): a choice of three prompts on different periods; thesis, contextualisation, evidence, historical reasoning, complexity

Where the points are lost

  • Thesis missing or not defensible, which costs the point and the complexity point with it
  • Documents described rather than used to support the argument
  • Outside evidence that is general ('trade increased') rather than a named, dated, specific example
  • The long essay prompt chosen for the period the student likes rather than the one with the most evidence to hand
  • Short answers written as paragraphs for part (a) with nothing left for (c)

From a practice composite to the exam

Practice composite Likely score now What moves it most
under 44% 1 or 2 content first: the units with the most multiple-choice misses, then one free-response question a week marked to the scoring guidelines
44% to 56% 3 the free response: every lost point is a specific missing thing on the rubric; fix the pattern, not the question
57% to 69% 4 timing and the hardest question type; a full timed paper every two weeks
70% and up 5 keep it: a timed paper every two weeks and the free-response questions that score under 70 percent

Questions parents ask

1How is the AP World History score calculated?
Section I, 55 multiple-choice questions, is 40 percent of the score and the three short-answer questions (3 points each) are 20 percent; Section II is the document-based question (7 points, 25 percent) and the long essay (6 points, 15 percent). The College Board weights each part as above and converts the composite to a 1 to 5 with cut points it sets after each exam. On the released curves about 70 percent of the composite is a 5, 57 percent a 4 and 44 percent a 3.
2What score do you need for a 5 on AP World History?
About 70 percent of the composite on the released curves, for example 40 of 55 multiple choice right, 7 of 9 on the short answers, 5 of 7 on the DBQ and 4 of 6 on the long essay. In 2025 only 13.9 percent of students scored a 5 while 33.4 percent scored a 4 and 26.5 percent a 2.
3How are the World History DBQ and long essay scored?
The DBQ on 7 points: thesis 1, contextualisation 1, document evidence up to 2, outside evidence 1, sourcing 1, complexity 1 (2025 mean 3.61). The long essay on 6 points: thesis 1, contextualisation 1, evidence up to 2, reasoning 1, complexity 1 (2025 means 2.84 to 3.23 by prompt). The short answers scored 1.69 to 2.31 of 3 on average.
4What was the average AP World History score in 2025?
The mean was 3.16 from 411,547 students, the fourth-largest AP exam: 13.9 percent scored 5, 33.4 percent 4, 17.0 percent 3, 26.5 percent 2 and 9.2 percent 1; 64.3 percent scored 3 or higher. The distribution is two-humped: a 4 and a 2 are the two most common scores.
