"AP English Literature Score Calculator" is searched after every practice exam and in the week after the real one, by students who want to turn a raw score into the 1 to 5. The arithmetic is published by the College Board and is on this page with a calculator; the only unknown is where the cut points fall, which the College Board sets after each exam and does not publish, so every calculator, this one included, uses estimates from released curves and says so. This page has the May 2027 format, the calculator, the estimated conversion table with raw-score examples, the May 2025 results, the free-response point values from the scoring guidelines, where the points are lost, and a printable worksheet.

How the exam is scored
| Section | Questions | Time | Share of the score | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I: multiple choice | 55 | 1 hour | 45% | 55, one each; no penalty for wrong answers |
| II: free response | 3 | 2 hours | 55% | 18: poetry analysis essay 6; prose fiction analysis essay 6; literary argument essay 6 |
| Total | 3 hours | 100% | composite as a percentage |
Section I. Five sets of 8 to 13 questions, each on a passage: at least two prose fiction passages (drama may be one of them) and at least two poems.
Section II. Each essay is scored 0 to 6 on the analytic rubric: Row A thesis (0 to 1), Row B evidence and commentary (0 to 4), Row C sophistication (0 to 1); 18 points in all. The free response is 55 percent of the score, the multiple choice 45.
The composite. The College Board converts each section to its share of the score (45 percent for the multiple choice, 55 for the free response) and adds them; the composite is then converted to a 1 to 5 with cut points set after the exam so that the standard stays constant from year to year. The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, 3 hours in total, on Wednesday 5 May 2027.
The calculator
Enter the multiple choice correct and the points on each free-response question from a practice paper marked to the scoring guidelines (be strict: a reader is).
AP English Literature and Composition score calculator (May 2027 format; estimated cut points)
Composite = 45% x (multiple choice correct / 55) + 55% x (free-response points / 18). The 1 to 5 is read from estimated cut points (70%, 58%, 46% and 34% of the composite for a 5, 4, 3 and 2), which are estimates from released curves; the College Board sets the real cut points after each exam and does not publish them. A composite within three points of a cut is on the line. No penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.
The conversion table (estimates)
| AP score | Composite (estimate) | For example | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 70% and up | 38 of 55 multiple choice and 13 of 18 free response | Extremely well qualified |
| 4 | 58% to 69% | 32 of 55 multiple choice and 10 of 18 free response | Well qualified |
| 3 | 46% to 57% | 25 of 55 multiple choice and 8 of 18 free response | Qualified |
| 2 | 34% to 45% | 19 of 55 multiple choice and 6 of 18 free response | Possibly qualified |
| 1 | under 34% | No recommendation |
The raw-score examples assume the same percentage in both sections; any mix that gives the composite works. These cut points are estimates from the released curves of past years. The College Board sets them after each administration and they move by a few points; a practice composite within three points of a boundary is on it, not over it.
A worked example. 41 of 55 multiple choice right and free-response scores of 4, 4, 4 (12 of 18): composite 70.2 percent, which is a 5 on the table, with little margin: a composite within three points of a cut is on the line, and one more free-response point on two questions is the safe side.
The May 2025 results
| Score | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 or higher | Mean |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Share of 416,531 students | 16.2% | 26.9% | 31.0% | 15.9% | 10.0% | 74.2% | 3.24 |
From the College Board's student score distributions for the May 2025 exams. The share at each score is the real guide to the cut points: a 5 in English Literature is the top 16.2 percent of the students who sat it, whatever the raw score that took.
What the free-response questions ask
- Poetry analysis: one poem; the essay reads how the poet's choices (imagery, structure, shifts, figurative language) build the speaker's complex attitude or the poem's meaning
- Prose fiction analysis: one passage of fiction or drama; the essay explains how the author's choices (narration, characterisation, setting, contrast) convey a complex character or relationship
- Literary argument: a concept or element in a work of the student's choice from the list of about 40 or another work of literary merit; the essay argues an interpretation of the whole work, not a summary
Where the points are lost
- A thesis that identifies a theme without a claim about how the text builds it, which scores 0 on Row A
- Plot summary in place of analysis: the 'evidence' retells what happens; Row B wants the choice the writer made and what it does
- Quotations dropped in without commentary, or a device named ('the poet uses enjambment') with no account of its effect
- The literary argument essay on a work the student half-remembers, so the evidence is vague and the argument generic
- No complexity: the essay argues one simple reading when the passage contains a tension or a shift, which is where Row C is earned
From a practice composite to the exam
| Practice composite | Likely score now | What moves it most |
|---|---|---|
| under 46% | 1 or 2 | content first: the units with the most multiple-choice misses, then one free-response question a week marked to the scoring guidelines |
| 46% to 57% | 3 | the free response: every lost point is a specific missing thing on the rubric; fix the pattern, not the question |
| 58% to 69% | 4 | timing and the hardest question type; a full timed paper every two weeks |
| 70% and up | 5 | keep it: a timed paper every two weeks and the free-response questions that score under 70 percent |
