"AP Environmental Science Score Calculator" is searched after every practice exam and in the week after the real one, by students who want to turn a raw score into the 1 to 5. The arithmetic is published by the College Board and is on this page with a calculator; the only unknown is where the cut points fall, which the College Board sets after each exam and does not publish, so every calculator, this one included, uses estimates from released curves and says so. This page has the May 2027 format, the calculator, the estimated conversion table with raw-score examples, the May 2025 results, the free-response point values from the scoring guidelines, where the points are lost, and a printable worksheet.

How the exam is scored

Section Questions Time Share of the score Points
I: multiple choice 80 1 hour 30 minutes 60% 80, one each; no penalty for wrong answers
II: free response 3 1 hour 10 minutes 40% 30: design an investigation 10; analyse and interpret quantitative data 10; analyse an environmental problem with calculations 10
Total 2 hours 40 minutes 100% composite as a percentage

Section I. Eighty questions across the nine units; a calculator is permitted throughout.

Section II. Three questions worth 10 points each, 30 in all, the values in the College Board's 2025 scoring statistics; the section is 40 percent of the score.

The composite. The College Board converts each section to its share of the score (60 percent for the multiple choice, 40 for the free response) and adds them; the composite is then converted to a 1 to 5 with cut points set after the exam so that the standard stays constant from year to year. The exam is fully digital in the Bluebook app, 2 hours 40 minutes in total, on Thursday 13 May 2027.

The calculator

Enter the multiple choice correct and the points on each free-response question from a practice paper marked to the scoring guidelines (be strict: a reader is).

AP Environmental Science score calculator (May 2027 format; estimated cut points)

Composite = 60% x (multiple choice correct / 80) + 40% x (free-response points / 30). The 1 to 5 is read from estimated cut points (71%, 58%, 45% and 33% of the composite for a 5, 4, 3 and 2), which are estimates from released curves; the College Board sets the real cut points after each exam and does not publish them. A composite within three points of a cut is on the line. No penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.

The conversion table (estimates)

AP score Composite (estimate) For example What it means
5 71% and up 57 of 80 multiple choice and 21 of 30 free response Extremely well qualified
4 58% to 70% 46 of 80 multiple choice and 17 of 30 free response Well qualified
3 45% to 57% 36 of 80 multiple choice and 14 of 30 free response Qualified
2 33% to 44% 26 of 80 multiple choice and 10 of 30 free response Possibly qualified
1 under 33% No recommendation

The raw-score examples assume the same percentage in both sections; any mix that gives the composite works. These cut points are estimates from the released curves of past years. The College Board sets them after each administration and they move by a few points; a practice composite within three points of a boundary is on it, not over it.

A worked example. 59 of 80 multiple choice right and free-response scores of 7, 7, 7 (21 of 30): composite 72.2 percent, which is a 5 on the table, with little margin: a composite within three points of a cut is on the line, and one more free-response point on two questions is the safe side.

The May 2025 results

Score 5 4 3 2 1 3 or higher Mean
Share of 245,371 students 12.6% 27.8% 28.8% 15.0% 15.8% 69.2% 3.06

From the College Board's student score distributions for the May 2025 exams. The share at each score is the real guide to the cut points: a 5 in Environmental Science is the top 12.6 percent of the students who sat it, whatever the raw score that took.

What the free-response questions ask

  • Design an investigation (10 points): a scenario with a model or a diagram; identify the hypothesis and variables, describe a method, and propose and justify a solution
  • Analyse and interpret quantitative data (10 points): a table, chart or graph; describe the trend, calculate from it, explain the environmental process behind it and propose a solution
  • Analyse an environmental problem with calculations (10 points): quantitative data about energy, water, population or pollution; show the calculations with units and explain the result

Where the points are lost

  • Calculations with no working or no units (the point is for the set-up and the unit, not only the number)
  • 'Describe' a solution answered without the environmental mechanism that makes it work
  • The variables in the investigation question not identified as independent, dependent and controlled
  • A trend described without the numbers from the table or graph
  • Multiple choice: the numeracy questions (percent change, doubling time, energy conversions) rushed

From a practice composite to the exam

Practice composite Likely score now What moves it most
under 45% 1 or 2 content first: the units with the most multiple-choice misses, then one free-response question a week marked to the scoring guidelines
45% to 57% 3 the free response: every lost point is a specific missing thing on the rubric; fix the pattern, not the question
58% to 70% 4 timing and the hardest question type; a full timed paper every two weeks
71% and up 5 keep it: a timed paper every two weeks and the free-response questions that score under 70 percent

Where to get help

A 1-on-1 online class for AP Environmental Science with every released free-response question marked to the College Board's scoring guidelines, the way a reader marks it, so the student learns which words earn the points; a timed full paper every two weeks from March; and the calculator above used after each one. The first 30-minute class is free: send the last practice score on WhatsApp or the contact page. The other exams are on the AP score calculator hub.

Questions parents ask

1How is the AP Environmental Science score calculated?
Section I, 80 multiple-choice questions, is 60 percent of the score; Section II, three free-response questions worth 10 points each (30 in all), is 40 percent. The College Board weights the sections 60 to 40 and converts the composite to a 1 to 5 with cut points it sets after each exam. On the released curves about 71 percent of the composite is a 5, 58 percent a 4 and 45 percent a 3.
2What score do you need for a 5 on APES?
About 71 percent of the composite on the released curves, for example 57 of 80 multiple choice right and 21 of 30 on the free response. In 2025 the mean free-response scores were 5.35, 4.34 and 4.47 of 10, so a student at 7 of 10 on each is well inside the top band on that section.
3How many points are the APES free-response questions worth?
Ten each: design an investigation, analyse and interpret quantitative data, and analyse an environmental problem with calculations, 30 in total per the College Board's 2025 scoring statistics. Each point is 1.3 percentage points of the composite, about the same as a multiple-choice question.
4What was the average AP Environmental Science score in 2025?
The mean was 3.06 from 245,371 students: 12.6 percent scored 5, 27.8 percent 4, 28.8 percent 3, 15.0 percent 2 and 15.8 percent 1; 69.2 percent scored 3 or higher.
