"AP Physics 1 Score Calculator" is searched after every practice exam and in the week after the real one, by students who want to turn a raw score into the 1 to 5. The arithmetic is published by the College Board and is on this page with a calculator; the only unknown is where the cut points fall, which the College Board sets after each exam and does not publish, so every calculator, this one included, uses estimates from released curves and says so. This page has the May 2027 format (which changed from the 2026 exam), the calculator, the estimated conversion table with raw-score examples, the May 2025 results, the free-response point values from the scoring guidelines, where the points are lost, and a printable worksheet.

Download the AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based score worksheet and conversion table (PDF) (the May 2027 format, the worksheet, the estimated conversion table with raw-score examples, the 2025 distribution, where the points are lost and a plan by practice score; two pages, free).

How the exam is scored

Section Questions Time Share of the score Points
I: multiple choice 42 85 minutes 50% 42, one each; no penalty for wrong answers
II: free response 4 95 minutes 50% 40: mathematical routines 10; translation between representations 12; experimental design and analysis 10; Qualitative/quantitative translation 8
Total 3 hours 100% composite as a percentage

Section I. Discrete questions and sets built on a shared diagram or data; a calculator and the AP Physics 1 equation tables are allowed throughout.

Section II. Four questions worth 10, 12, 10 and 8 points, 40 in all, the values in the College Board's 2025 and 2026 scoring guidelines. The sections are weighted equally at 50 percent.

The composite. The College Board converts each section to its share of the score (50 percent for the multiple choice, 50 for the free response) and adds them; the composite is then converted to a 1 to 5 with cut points set after the exam so that the standard stays constant from year to year. The exam is hybrid digital (multiple choice in Bluebook, free response handwritten), 3 hours in total, on Wednesday 5 May 2027.

What changed for 2027. For the May 2025 and 2026 exams Section I had 40 questions in 80 minutes and Section II 100 minutes; from May 2027 Section I is 42 questions in 85 minutes and Section II 95 minutes. The four free-response question types and their points are unchanged, so the 2025 and 2026 released questions are exact practice.

The calculator

Enter the multiple choice correct and the points on each free-response question from a practice paper marked to the scoring guidelines (be strict: a reader is).

AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based score calculator (May 2027 format; estimated cut points)

Composite = 50% x (multiple choice correct / 42) + 50% x (free-response points / 40). The 1 to 5 is read from estimated cut points (67%, 53%, 40% and 28% of the composite for a 5, 4, 3 and 2), which are estimates from released curves; the College Board sets the real cut points after each exam and does not publish them. A composite within three points of a cut is on the line. No penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers.

The conversion table (estimates)

AP score Composite (estimate) For example What it means
5 67% and up 28 of 42 multiple choice and 27 of 40 free response Extremely well qualified
4 53% to 66% 22 of 42 multiple choice and 21 of 40 free response Well qualified
3 40% to 52% 17 of 42 multiple choice and 16 of 40 free response Qualified
2 28% to 39% 12 of 42 multiple choice and 11 of 40 free response Possibly qualified
1 under 28% No recommendation

The raw-score examples assume the same percentage in both sections; any mix that gives the composite works. These cut points are estimates from the released curves of past years. The College Board sets them after each administration and they move by a few points; a practice composite within three points of a boundary is on it, not over it.

A worked example. 31 of 42 multiple choice right and free-response scores of 7, 9, 7, 6 (29 of 40): composite 73.2 percent, which is a 5 on the table, with room to spare.

The May 2025 results

Score 5 4 3 2 1 3 or higher Mean
Share of 174,401 students 19.8% 24.7% 22.9% 13.4% 19.2% 67.3% 3.12

From the College Board's student score distributions for the May 2025 exams. The share at each score is the real guide to the cut points: a 5 in Physics 1 is the top 19.8 percent of the students who sat it, whatever the raw score that took.

What the free-response questions ask

  • Mathematical routines (10 points): a multi-step calculation from a scenario, with a derivation in symbols before numbers
  • Translation between representations (12 points): the same situation in words, a diagram, a graph and an equation; draw the free-body diagram, sketch the graph, write the expression, and say how they agree
  • Experimental design and analysis (10 points): design a procedure to measure a quantity, list the equipment, say what to graph and how the slope gives the answer, and analyse given data
  • Qualitative/quantitative translation (8 points): a claim about a physical situation; argue it in words from a principle, then show the equation supports the argument

Where the points are lost

  • A free-body diagram with a force that does not exist ('the force of motion') or with forces drawn from the wrong point
  • The derivation skipped: numbers substituted before the symbolic expression is written, so the method points are lost even when the answer is right
  • Experimental design: a procedure with no stated measurement of one of the variables, or 'repeat and average' as the whole analysis
  • The paragraph-length argument written as a list of equations, or as a paragraph with no physics principle named
  • Energy and momentum conservation applied where a non-conservative force or an external force breaks them

From a practice composite to the exam

Practice composite Likely score now What moves it most
under 40% 1 or 2 content first: the units with the most multiple-choice misses, then one free-response question a week marked to the scoring guidelines
40% to 52% 3 the free response: every lost point is a specific missing thing on the rubric; fix the pattern, not the question
53% to 66% 4 timing and the hardest question type; a full timed paper every two weeks
67% and up 5 keep it: a timed paper every two weeks and the free-response questions that score under 70 percent

Where to get help

A 1-on-1 online class for AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based with every released free-response question marked to the College Board's scoring guidelines, the way a reader marks it, so the student learns which words earn the points; a timed full paper every two weeks from March; and the calculator above used after each one. Questions parents ask

1How is the AP Physics 1 score calculated?
Section I, 42 multiple-choice questions from May 2027, is half the score; Section II, four free-response questions worth 10, 12, 10 and 8 points (40 in all), is the other half. The College Board weights the two sections equally and converts the composite to a 1 to 5 with cut points set after each exam. On the released curves about 67 percent of the points is a 5, 53 percent a 4 and 40 percent a 3.
2What score do you need for a 5 on AP Physics 1?
About 67 percent of the composite on the released curves, for example 30 of 42 multiple choice right and 26 of 40 on the free response. Physics 1 has the lowest 3-or-higher rate of the large science exams, so its cut points sit lower in raw terms than Chemistry's.
3What changed in the AP Physics 1 exam for 2027?
Section I goes from 40 questions in 80 minutes to 42 in 85 minutes, and Section II from 100 to 95 minutes. The four free-response question types (mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design and analysis, qualitative/quantitative translation) and their 10, 12, 10 and 8 points are unchanged from the 2025 revision.
4What was the average AP Physics 1 score in 2025?
The mean was 3.12 from 174,401 students: 19.8 percent scored 5, 24.7 percent 4, 22.9 percent 3, 13.4 percent 2 and 19.2 percent 1; 67.3 percent scored 3 or higher. Nearly a fifth of students score a 1, the highest share among the sciences.
