Ask a groep 6 child what they did in science this week and you get a puzzled look, because science in Dutch primary school is not a thing a child can name. There is no subject called science on the timetable, no science book, no science test that counts for anything. What exists is natuur en techniek, one strand of wereldoriëntatie, taught in themes for an hour or two a week and marked on the report with a letter that nobody in groep 8 will ever look at. For a family from India, where EVS starts in Class 1 and NCERT science in Class 6, that is the most surprising gap in the Dutch curriculum, and it is the one that costs the most later if it is ignored. This post explains what is actually taught, where the Indian child stands beside it, when science finally arrives at 12, and what to do in the meantime.
What the Dutch curriculum actually says
The Dutch primary curriculum is written as kerndoelen, end-of-primary goals, not as a year-by-year syllabus. Seven of them, kerndoelen 40 to 46, cover natuur en techniek: plants and animals and their environment; the child's own body and health; physical phenomena such as light, sound, electricity, force, magnetism and temperature; weather and climate; how everyday technical products work; designing and making something; and the earth, sun, moon and seasons. The school decides how, when and for how many hours, and there is no national test against any of it. The goals are being revised at the moment and the new versions keep the same shape: nature and technology inside a broad "mens en natuur" area rather than a science subject.
Because nothing tests it, science gets the hours that are left after rekenen, taal and begrijpend lezen, the three subjects that decide the school advice. In groep 3 and 4 that is mostly circle time and Schooltv clips. From groep 5 it is one or two lessons a week from a wereldoriëntatie method, and a theme test at the end of each block.
How it looks in the classroom
Most schools use one of a handful of methods: Blink Wereld, which runs geography, history and nature together in themes; Naut, the nature and technology book from the same publisher as many maths methods; Argus Clou; Faqta; or Natuurzaken. A theme runs four to six weeks, "Energie", "Het heelal", "Je lichaam", and ends with a method test marked O to G on the report under natuur en techniek or simply wereldoriëntatie. Many schools have added "wetenschap en technologie" lessons in the last decade, usually built around onderzoekend en ontwerpend leren, learning by investigating and designing, sometimes with a technieklokaal or a set of technology boxes, and an annual trip to NEMO in Amsterdam, Naturalis in Leiden or the Museon in The Hague. Het Klokhuis on television does more science teaching for Dutch children than most timetables.
One of our students in Hoofddorp, a groep 7 boy who had done Class 5 EVS and half of Class 6 science in Chennai, loved science and asked his teacher when it would start. The answer was that the class was doing a Blink theme on energy for six weeks, and then a theme on the Middle Ages. He was not wrong to ask and the teacher was not wrong to answer; they were simply describing different systems. His science that year happened with us on Thursday evenings, and in brugklas year 1 he was the child in the biologie class who already knew what a cell was.

An Indian child arriving at 12 carries two years of physics and chemistry vocabulary in English that the Dutch brugklas expects nobody to have. That is a real asset in year 1 and year 2, but only if it survives three or four years of Dutch primary school with no science in it. A child who arrives at 8 and does nothing until the brugklas arrives there with the same blank page as everyone else, and the memory of once having liked science.
Why it does not hurt the school advice, and where it does hurt
Nothing about science reaches the groep 8 advice. The Cito and IEP monitoring tests cover rekenen, begrijpend lezen, spelling and technisch lezen; the doorstroomtoets covers rekenen and taal; the advice is built on those plus werkhouding. A child who has never held a magnet gets the same vwo advice as one who has. In that narrow sense a parent can relax.
It hurts in three places. Returning to India: of all the subjects, science is the one that drifts furthest from CBSE, because Class 6, 7 and 8 science is content-heavy and a Dutch primary child has met none of it; the plan for that is in how to keep your child CBSE-ready. Switching to an international school: IB MYP science from age 11 expects a child to write a hypothesis, control a variable and draw a labelled graph, habits that a Dutch primary school does not build. The brugklas itself: natuurkunde arrives in year 2 with formulae, speed as distance over time, density as mass over volume, and units, and a Dutch primary child meets them with no runway at all. There is a fourth cost that has no test attached. A curious 8-year-old who asks why the sky is blue and gets a Blink theme on the Middle Ages stops asking by 10. Curiosity is easy to keep and hard to restart.
A weekly plan that does not fight the school
Forty-five to sixty minutes a week is enough, and none of it should look like homework.
- A spine. Follow a structured sequence in English so that topics build rather than repeat. For a family staying in Europe, Cambridge Primary Science stages 3 to 6 and Lower Secondary stages 7 and 8 are the clearest; for a family likely to return to India, the NCERT books for Class 4 to 8, which are free to download and exactly what the child will be examined on.
- One experiment a fortnight, in the kitchen. Separating salt from sand, a density tower of honey, water and oil, a lemon battery, a paper helicopter with different wing lengths, a bean in the dark and a bean on the windowsill. Write down the question, the guess, what happened and why, four lines. That is the lab report habit, and it is the thing MYP and the brugklas will reward.
- The Dutch words for the school's theme. Ask the teacher what the current wereldoriëntatie theme is and learn fifteen words for it: de proef (experiment), het onderzoek (investigation), meten (to measure), de uitkomst (result), de stroomkring (circuit), de magneet, de schaduw (shadow), verdampen (evaporate), smelten (melt), de zwaartekracht (gravity), het zonnestelsel (solar system). The theme test is vocabulary, and a child who knows the words in English learns them in Dutch in an evening.
- Use the spreekbeurt and the werkstuk. In groep 6 to 8 every child gives a talk and writes a project. A science topic, done with a demonstration, is the one place the Dutch school will actively reward what the child does at home, and it lands in the werkhouding half of the report.
- Go and see it. NEMO in Amsterdam, Naturalis in Leiden, the Museon-Omniversum in The Hague, Space Expo in Noordwijk, Corpus in Oegstgeest, Teylers in Haarlem. Museumkaart makes them cheap. Mad Science runs after-school clubs in many cities, and FIRST LEGO League has an Explore division for 6 to 10 year olds that Dutch schools and libraries host.

We teach science in English to children of 8 to 14 on the Cambridge or NCERT spine, one hour a week, with an experiment or a demonstration in most lessons and the four-line report from the start, so that a child in a Dutch school has a science education running quietly beside the Dutch one and arrives in the brugklas, the MYP or Class 8 in India already fluent.
