Brugklas year 1: what changes in maths and science at 12, and how to stay ahead

The move from groep 8 to the brugklas is the biggest jump in a Dutch child's school life: from one classroom teacher to ten subject teachers, from no homework to homework every day, and from rekenen to wiskunde. For a child from India it is also the point where the Dutch and Indian systems come back into line in content, which is the good news, and the point where the first two years decide the track for the rest of secondary school, which is the news that matters. This post sets out what year 1 brings in maths and science, how it compares with CBSE Class 7, and how to use the year well.

What the brugklas is

Dutch secondary school starts at 12 with the brugklas, the bridge year. Depending on the school advice from groep 8, a child enters a VMBO, HAVO or VWO stream, or a mixed class such as HAVO/VWO where the track is decided at the end of year 1 or 2 on results. The practical changes are large. Each subject has its own teacher, book and test schedule. Homework is set daily and checked. Grades are numbers from 1 to 10, with 5.5 as the pass mark, and the year's grades are averaged into a report that decides promotion (overgaan) or repeating (blijven zitten). Most schools use an online planner (Magister or SOMtoday) where parents can see every grade and every homework task. Indian parents tend to like this part.

Wiskunde in year 1

Rekenen becomes wiskunde, and the content in year 1 of a HAVO/VWO brugklas typically covers:

  • Negative numbers with all four operations, and the number line extended below zero.
  • Algebra for the first time: variables, formulas, simplifying expressions, substituting values.
  • Linear relationships: tables, formulas and graphs of the form y = ax + b, reading and drawing graphs, coordinates in all four quadrants.
  • Solving linear equations by the balance method (the "weegschaal").
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio revisited at a faster pace, with percentage increase and decrease.
  • Geometry: angles and angle sums, triangles and quadrilaterals, symmetry, drawing with ruler and protractor, area and perimeter of compound shapes, the first work with solids and their nets.
  • Statistics: frequency tables, bar charts, pie charts, mean, median and mode.

Compared with CBSE Class 7, an Indian child will find the algebra and equations familiar and slightly easier, will be behind on graphs, coordinates and statistics, which CBSE leaves until later or treats lightly, and will be surprised by how much of every test is context questions with several marks for the working. The marking is generous for a correct method with a small slip and hard on a bare answer.

Science in year 1

Here the Dutch brugklas moves ahead of CBSE in structure. Biology (biologie) is a separate subject from year 1: cells, plants, the human body, ecology, taught with a proper textbook and tests. Physics and chemistry (natuurkunde and scheikunde) start in year 1 or 2 depending on the school, and by year 3 all three are separate subjects with practicals (practica) and lab reports.

Many schools also run a combined science or technology subject in year 1 and, at bilingual (tto) schools, teach the sciences in English. A child from a CBSE school who has done NCERT Class 6 science has met most of the ideas and none of the practical work; a child straight from a Dutch groep 8 has often done neither. Why the first two years decide so much

Moving up a track, HAVO to VWO in particular, is decided on results at the end of year 1 or 2. So is being moved down. The subjects that weigh most in that decision are Dutch, English, maths and, at many schools, the sciences. For a child still catching up in Dutch, maths and science are where they can be visibly strong, and a strong maths and science profile is exactly what a school wants to see before it moves a child up.

That is the strategic point for Indian families: in the brugklas, maths and science are not only subjects, they are the argument for the higher track. Being a year ahead in wiskunde is worth more here than it was in groep 6.

How to use year 1 well

Get the year plan in September. Every subject publishes its chapters and test weeks (toetsweken) at the start of the year. Put the maths and science test dates in the family calendar.

Follow the school's method, in English. Getal & Ruimte, Moderne Wiskunde and Math4All are all on the national syllabus; the chapter order differs. Working the same chapter a week ahead of the class, in English, with the Dutch terms alongside, means the child walks into every lesson already understanding it and spends class time on the Dutch.

Learn the Dutch of maths tests. Bereken, teken, leg uit, rond af op, hoeveel procent, verhouding, formule, grafiek. Thirty words. A child who knows them stops losing marks on questions they can do.

Do the practicals properly. Lab reports (verslagen) are graded and Indian children have rarely written one. The structure is standard: research question, hypothesis, method, results, conclusion, discussion. Learn it once and use it for six years.

Keep the stretch. A child who is ahead should not coast in year 1. Adding the next chapter, harder problems from the method's own "verdieping" sections, or Kangaroo-style problems keeps the lead that moves the track.

What we do in a weekly brugklas class

We teach wiskunde in English one chapter ahead of the school, using the school's own method and the Dutch vocabulary, and we prepare specifically for each toetsweek with past school tests where families have them. From year 1 we teach biology, and physics and chemistry from the year the school starts them, including the lab-report structure. For families thinking about a return to India, the same classes cover the CBSE topics the Dutch year does not, so both doors stay open.

Questions parents ask

1What is the brugklas?
The first year (sometimes the first two years) of Dutch secondary school, the "bridge" between primary school and the definite track. Many schools run mixed brugklassen, for example HAVO/VWO, and decide the track at the end of year 1 or 2 on results.
2Which maths book will my child use?
Most schools use Getal & Ruimte, Moderne Wiskunde or Math4All (a free online method). All follow the same national syllabus for the first years; the order of chapters differs slightly. Tell us the method and we follow it.
3How does brugklas maths compare with CBSE Class 7?
Similar in content, different in emphasis. Both cover integers, algebra, linear equations and geometry. CBSE goes further in algebraic manipulation and formal geometry; the Dutch brugklas goes further in graphs, coordinates, ratio, statistics and applying maths to real situations, and it starts formal science as separate subjects that CBSE spreads over Classes 6 to 8.
