If your child moved from an Indian school into a Dutch basisschool, the first report card is confusing. There are no marks out of 100, no rank, and the maths, called rekenen, looks nothing like the textbook you grew up with. This guide walks through what is actually taught in each groep from 3 to 8, which Indian class it lines up with, and the three places where children from India typically pull ahead or slip behind.
How Dutch primary school is organised
Dutch primary school (basisschool) runs from groep 1 to groep 8. Groep 1 and 2 are the kindergarten years, ages 4 and 5. Formal reading and maths begin in groep 3 at age 6, and children leave for secondary school after groep 8 at age 12.
Children are placed by age, not by what they already know. A child who finished Class 3 in India at age 8 joins groep 5, whatever their level.

Two things run through all six years. First, progress is tracked by a pupil monitoring system (leerlingvolgsysteem, often Cito or IEP tests taken in January and June) rather than by exams the school writes itself. Second, the whole Dutch approach is built on handig rekenen, "smart arithmetic": children are expected to choose a strategy, estimate, and explain, not just produce the answer.
Groep 3 (age 6): numbers to 20, then to 100
The first year of formal maths. Children learn to count, read and write numbers to 20, then to 100, and to add and subtract within 20 fluently. The number line and "splitsen" (splitting a number into parts, 8 = 5 + 3) are the core tools. Shapes, simple measuring and telling the hour on an analogue clock come in during the second half.
A child from an Indian Class 1 will find this comfortable. Most have already done addition to 100 in India.
Groep 4 (age 7): to 100, and the times tables begin
Addition and subtraction to 100 with "bridging" through tens (47 + 8 goes via 50). The tafels start: usually the tables of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 this year. Money, half hours and quarter hours on the clock, and the first proper word problems appear.
This is the first place Indian families notice a gap in the other direction. In India, tables are often drilled to 12 or 15 by the end of Class 2. In the Netherlands, only the tables to 10 are expected, and not until groep 5. A child who already knows them will be "ahead", but the school will spend the year on strategy: knowing that 6 ร 7 is 5 ร 7 plus one more 7.
Groep 5 (age 8): all tables, division facts, written methods
By the end of groep 5 every child should have the tables 1 to 10 and the matching division facts (deeltafels) automatised. Numbers go to 1,000 and beyond, and written column addition and subtraction ("cijferend rekenen") is introduced. Time to the minute, money to the cent, and reading simple tables and graphs are also here.
The Dutch column method is set out differently from the Indian one, and children are often taught an intermediate "kolomsgewijs" method first. A child who arrives knowing the Indian algorithm gets the right answer and is still marked down for not showing the expected steps. We see this constantly with newly arrived children. It is a notation problem, not a maths problem, and it is fixed in two or three sessions.
Groep 6 (age 9): large numbers, long multiplication, first fractions
Numbers to 10,000 and 100,000, long multiplication and long division in columns, and the first meeting with breuken (fractions) as parts of a whole and on a number line. Decimal numbers (kommagetallen) appear through money and measurement. Perimeter and area, the metric system and reading timetables round out the year.
This is the year Indian children are furthest ahead on paper. In CBSE Class 4 they have already met fractions, factors and multiples, and multi-digit division. In a Dutch groep 6 that content is just starting. It is also the year where being ahead starts to cost something: a child who is not stretched will coast, and by groep 8 the edge is gone. Groep 7 (age 10): fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio
The heaviest year of primary maths. Adding and subtracting fractions, converting between fractions, decimals and percentages (procenten), ratio and proportion using the "verhoudingstabel" (ratio table), negative numbers on the number line, averages, and metric conversions across length, weight, volume and time. Word problems get longer and are set in real situations: discounts, recipes, train timetables, maps with scale.
The ratio table is a specifically Dutch tool that Indian parents have usually never seen. It is worth learning yourself, because it is how your child will be taught to do nearly every proportion problem, and the doorstroomtoets expects it.
Groep 8 (age 11): consolidation and the doorstroomtoets
Groep 8 has almost no new topics. The year consolidates everything from groep 6 and 7 and prepares for the doorstroomtoets, taken in the first half of February. The test covers Dutch reading and language and rekenen. Maths is tested at two reference levels: 1F, the fundamental level every child should reach, and 1S, the higher target level that supports a HAVO or VWO advice.
The school gives its secondary school advice (VWO, HAVO or VMBO) before the test. A strong test result can raise that advice. A weak one cannot lower it. That is why groep 7 matters more than most parents realise: the advice is largely formed on groep 7 results.
What is not in Dutch primary maths at all: algebra with letters, equations, and formal geometry proofs. An Indian Class 6 child has started all three. Dutch children meet them in the first year of secondary school (brugklas).
Where children from India pull ahead
- Arithmetic speed. Tables, mental addition and written algorithms are usually a year or two ahead.
- Fractions and large numbers. Met earlier in CBSE, so groep 6 and 7 content is familiar.
- Willingness to practise. Dutch schools set very little maths homework in primary. A child used to daily practice keeps an edge if the practice continues at home.
Where they fall behind
- Word problems in Dutch (redactiesommen). The maths is easy; the reading is not. A child who cannot parse "Hoeveel procent korting krijgt Sanne?" cannot show what she knows. Cito and IEP tests are almost entirely context problems.
- Explaining the method. "Laat zien hoe je het hebt uitgerekend" (show how you worked it out) is on every page. Children trained to write only the answer lose marks for correct answers.
- Estimation and the number line. Dutch teaching leans on estimating first and checking against the estimate. Children who go straight to the algorithm are seen as weaker than they are.
What we do about it
In our Netherlands classes we teach maths in English, in the Dutch order, using the Dutch terms, at the pace an Indian family expects. That means: keep the tables and written methods sharp, learn the ratio table and the Dutch column layout so classwork matches, practise explaining a method in a sentence, and work through translated redactiesommen so the language stops hiding the maths. From groep 7 we add the algebra and geometry that a child returning to India, or aiming for VWO, will need anyway.
