If your child is at Amity in Amstelveen, the international schools in Amsterdam, The Hague or Eindhoven, or any IB school from Dubai to Toronto, their primary years are the PYP, the Primary Years Programme. To a parent educated in India it looks unstructured: no textbook, no marks, projects about rivers and communities, and maths that seems to appear and disappear. It is in fact very structured, just not in the way CBSE is. This guide explains what is taught, how, why the report looks the way it does, and the one thing Indian parents genuinely need to watch.
The five strands
PYP maths is organised into five strands, taught every year from age 3 to 12 at increasing depth.

The strands are the same in every PYP school in the world. The IB publishes a scope and sequence for each, in four phases rather than by age, so schools can move a child through the phases at their own pace. Phase 4 is roughly the end of primary.
How it is taught: inquiry and the three stages
PYP maths happens in two places. Some of it sits inside the six transdisciplinary units of inquiry each year: a unit on "how the world works" might carry measurement and data handling; a unit on marketplaces might carry money and number. The rest is taught as stand-alone maths lessons, because the IB itself says that not all maths fits naturally into a unit.
Within a topic the PYP describes three stages, and it is worth knowing the words because they appear on reports:
- Constructing meaning. The child meets the idea through concrete materials and real situations, and builds their own understanding. Fractions start with folding paper and sharing pizzas, not with a definition.
- Transferring meaning into symbols. The idea is connected to the mathematical notation and language.
- Applying with understanding. The child uses it in new situations and explains their reasoning.
This is why a PYP class can spend three weeks on something a CBSE class does in three days. The child is being asked to understand and explain, not only to perform. It is also why, by age 11, PYP children explain their thinking better than most CBSE children and calculate more slowly.
Why the report has no marks
The PYP assesses against learning outcomes and reports what the child can do, in the school's own words or in phases. There are no percentages, no ranks, and in most schools no tests as Indian parents know them. Teachers gather evidence over time: observations, tasks, the child's own reflections, and at the end of the programme the PYP exhibition, an extended inquiry the children present themselves.
For an Indian parent this is the hardest adjustment. There is no number to track. What you can track is the phase, the specific outcomes marked as "developing" rather than "secure", and the teacher's comments, which are usually precise if you read them carefully. If the report says your child is "working towards" an outcome in number, that is the signal to act.
The one thing to watch: number fluency
Everything else in the PYP approach transfers well. The one place where Indian families are right to be careful is number fluency: times tables, mental addition and subtraction, written methods, fraction and decimal operations. The PYP builds these, but with fewer repetitions and later than CBSE, and a child who is not fluent in number by the end of PYP struggles in MYP 1, where the pace picks up and the criteria start counting. The answer is not a CBSE worksheet every evening. A young child taught two contradictory methods gets confused and loses confidence in both. The answer is short, regular practice in the school's own representations (number lines, arrays, place-value charts, the school's written method) until the facts and methods are automatic, plus the habit of saying how they know, because that is what the school will ask.
Ages and what to expect
Ages 6 to 8 (Phase 2, roughly Grades 1 to 2). Number to 100 and beyond, addition and subtraction strategies, early multiplication as repeated addition and arrays, simple fractions, patterns, basic shapes, measuring with standard units, pictographs. A CBSE child will be a year ahead on written sums and behind on explaining.
Ages 8 to 10 (Phase 3, roughly Grades 3 to 4). Multiplication and division facts, place value to thousands and beyond, fractions and decimals as equivalent forms, area and perimeter, angles, data in bar graphs and tables, probability as likelihood. This is the age to make sure the tables and written methods are secure.
Ages 10 to 12 (Phase 4, roughly Grades 5 to 6). Operations with fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio, order of operations, patterns expressed as rules, coordinates and transformations, volume, mean and median, the exhibition. By the end the child should be ready for MYP 1, which means fluent number and the habit of explaining.
What we do with PYP students
Our PYP classes in the Netherlands, the UAE and Canada do three things. We keep number and pattern fluent in the school's representations, so the child is never the slow one in class. We build the explaining habit, in the PYP's own language, because the same habit becomes criterion C in MYP. And from age 10 we look ahead to MYP 1, so the child starts the Middle Years from strength. We do not run a parallel curriculum and we do not contradict the school's method.
