CBSE online tuition in Qatar: the Indian schools in Doha, class times that fit a Qatar school day, what an hour costs in riyals, and how to judge a tutor in one free class

Indians are the largest community in Qatar, and the Indian schools in Doha are among the biggest CBSE schools anywhere: several of them have more than 5,000 students, and a Class 8 section of 40 is ordinary. A child who loses a chapter in a class that size is not noticed until the term result, and the family then looks for help after school. This page is what we tell those families when they call: how the CBSE year in Qatar runs from a tutor's side, why the time difference is an advantage, what children in Class 6 to 12 usually need, what an hour costs in riyals against the local options, and how to judge a tutor in the first free class.

CBSE in Qatar: the year, the schools, the exam

The Indian schools in Qatar are CBSE-affiliated and follow the same year as CBSE schools in India: April to March, with the first-term exams before the Diwali break, pre-boards in December and January for Class 10 and 12, and the board exams in February and March, sat in Doha on the same dates and with the same papers as in India. The textbooks are NCERT. From Class 9 the exam pattern is the CBSE sample-paper pattern, with competency-based questions (case studies, assertion and reason, data-based word problems) carrying a growing share of the marks every year.

The schools our students come from, all in or around Doha: Birla Public School, DPS Modern Indian School, MES Indian School, Ideal Indian School, Shantiniketan Indian School, Doha Modern Indian School, Bhavan's Public School, Olive International School, Pearl School, Rajagiri Public School and the Al Khor International School for families in the north. The syllabus is the same NCERT in every one of them; the pace, the worksheets and the internal tests differ, and we follow the school's, not our own.

Two things about Qatar shape the plan:

  • The school week is Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday off. The long weekend session happens on Friday or Saturday morning, not Sunday.
  • The school day ends early, usually by 1:30 pm, and the Doha traffic adds an hour. A 4 or 5 pm class at home works for almost every family. The evening is for dinner and the child is tired by 7.

The time zone is the easiest in the Gulf

Qatar is 2.5 hours behind India, with no daylight saving on either side. A 4 pm class in Doha is 6:30 pm in Chandigarh; a 6 pm class is 8:30 pm. Those are ordinary working hours for a tutor in India, which is why the same tutor can teach your child every week at the same time for a year without the "my tutor keeps changing" problem that families on US time run into.

Doha Chandigarh Who takes it
3:30 to 4:30 pm 6:00 to 7:00 pm Classes 6 to 8, straight after the bus
5:00 to 6:00 pm 7:30 to 8:30 pm Classes 9 to 12
Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 1 pm 12:30 to 3:30 pm Board-year practice papers

What children in Qatar usually need, class by class

Class Where the school moves fast What we are asked to fix
6 to 7 Fractions and decimals, ratio, the first algebra; the first science with experiments and long answers Arithmetic that never became automatic, and reading speed in science
8 Linear equations, exponents, factorisation, mensuration Algebraic identities and the three-step word problem, which decide Class 9
9 Polynomials, coordinate geometry, Euclid's geometry and proof; motion, force, gravitation The jump in the length and style of answers; the year the "topper till Class 8" calls come from
10 The board syllabus: real numbers to statistics; light, electricity, carbon compounds, heredity Pace and exam technique: a term-ahead plan so that the pre-boards are a rehearsal
11 and 12 Physics, chemistry and maths at a pace built for JEE and NEET aspirants Class 11 mechanics and organic chemistry; Class 12 calculus and the board-plus-entrance balance

How to judge a tutor in one free class

A good online tutor can be tested in thirty minutes, and the test is not "was my child happy". Ask for the free class on the chapter the school is on this week. Watch for five things:

  1. The tutor asks what the school did last week and what comes next, before teaching anything.
  2. The child writes on the shared whiteboard and the tutor stops the error at the line it happens, not at the end.
  3. The explanation uses a diagram or a worked example, not a lecture.
  4. The class ends with a short plan that names the gap: "Fractions are fine; the problem is converting a word problem into an equation, and that takes about four weeks."
  5. The recording arrives afterwards, without being asked.

A tutor who does all five in a free class will do them in the paid ones. We wrote the longer version of this test, twelve questions and a checklist, in how to choose an online tutor for your child.

How we teach families in Qatar

A team of 20+ women educators with master's degrees in their subjects, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018, in English, Hindi or Punjabi. Sixty-minute 1-on-1 classes on a shared whiteboard: homework marked aloud, the new idea taught in the school's order, thirty minutes of the child working while the tutor watches every line, the school's own homework started together. The recording, the notes and the marked work go to the parent after every class. Parents are welcome in every class; the tutor never contacts the child outside the class; nothing is paid up front.

Questions parents ask

1What time are online classes for a child in Qatar?
Qatar is 2.5 hours behind India all year. A 4 pm class in Doha is 6:30 pm in Chandigarh and a 6 pm class is 8:30 pm, ordinary working hours for our tutors. Friday and Saturday mornings in Qatar are Indian early afternoons, which is where Class 10 and 12 students take their longer sessions.
2Which Indian schools in Qatar do you teach students from?
Children from most of the CBSE schools in Doha: Birla Public School, DPS Modern Indian School, MES Indian School, Ideal Indian School, Shantiniketan Indian School, Doha Modern Indian School, Bhavan's Public School, Olive International School, Pearl School, Rajagiri Public School and the Al Khor International School. The syllabus is the same NCERT in every one; the pace and the worksheets differ, and we follow the school.
3How much does CBSE online tuition cost in Qatar?
Our rate is US$10 to $13 an hour, about QAR 37 to 47, for a live 1-on-1 class with a master's-qualified tutor, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework, billed monthly with no package and no contract. The first 30-minute class is free.
4Is the class in English or Hindi?
English as standard, because that is the language of the school and the board exam, with the explanation switching to Hindi or Punjabi whenever the child needs it. Most of our Qatar families are from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and the north; the children are taught in English either way.
5Do you prepare for the CBSE board exams in Qatar?
Yes. The Gulf centres sit the same CBSE Class 10 and 12 papers on the same dates as India, in February and March. From Class 9 we teach to the sample-paper pattern, and in the board year the plan is a term ahead of the school so that the December pre-boards are a rehearsal.
