"UCAS points calculator" is searched by Year 12 and Year 13 students who have an offer written in points or a predicted grade sheet in letters, and by parents trying to read a prospectus. The UCAS Tariff is a published table, so the calculation is exact; what is not obvious is which qualifications are on it, what counts and what does not, and what a points total means against the offers universities actually make, which are mostly in grades. This page has the calculator, the Tariff table for 2027 entry from UCAS's own tables, the rules, and a reading of the totals.

Download the UCAS Tariff table for 2027 entry and worksheet (PDF) (every grade on the main qualifications with its points, the grade-to-points equivalents for typical offers, the rules on what counts, and a worksheet to add up your own; two pages, free).

The calculator

Pick each qualification and its grade (or the grade you are predicted), and the total updates. Up to eight rows; leave the rest blank.

UCAS Tariff points calculator (2027 entry tables)

Values from the UCAS Tariff tables for 2027 entry (ucas.com, read 27 October 2026). An AS in a subject you completed as a full A level is not counted; enter only the A level. Universities set their own offers and may not use the Tariff or may not accept every qualification on it; the total here is what UCAS counts, not what any course requires. Not a UCAS product.

The Tariff table for 2027 entry

From the UCAS Tariff tables for 2027 entry. Points depend on the size of the qualification (its size band) and the grade; a full A level is size band 4, an AS or EPQ size band 2, a BTEC Extended Diploma three size-4 units.

Qualification Grades and points
A level A* 56, A 48, B 40, C 32, D 24, E 16
A level Double Award AA 112, A*A 104, AA 96, AB 88, BB 80, BC 72, CC 64, CD 56, DD 48, DE 40, EE 32

IB certificate, Higher Level 7 = 56, 6 = 48, 5 = 40, 4 = 32, 3 = 24, 2 = 16, 1 = 12
IB certificate, Standard Level 7 = 28, 6 = 24, 5 = 20, 4 = 16, 3 = 12, 2 = 8, 1 = 6
IB Extended Essay certificate A 12, B 10, C 8, D 6, E 4
Scottish Higher A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15
Scottish Advanced Higher A 56, B 48, C 40, D 32
Cambridge Pre-U Principal Subject D1 and D2 56, D3 52, M1 44, M2 40, M3 36, P1 28, P2 24, P3 20

The full IB Diploma is not scored as a single Tariff line; its components (each Higher and Standard Level certificate and the Extended Essay) are, and universities that use the Diploma mostly ask for a Diploma points total (for example 34 points with 6, 6, 5 at Higher Level) rather than Tariff points.

Three-A-level equivalents

Offers are mostly made in grades; this is what the common ones are in points, and what a BTEC or T Level needs to match them.

Grades Points BTEC Extended Diploma equivalent T Level equivalent
AAA* 168 DDD* Distinction*
A*AA 152 D*DD
AAA 144 DDD Distinction
AAB 136
ABB 128 DDM
BBB 120 Merit
BBC 112 DMM
BCC 104
CCC 96 MMM Pass (core A* to C)
CDD 80 MMP
DDD 72 Pass (core D or E)
EEE 48 PPP

The rules

  • Only full qualifications count once. An AS level in a subject you went on to complete as an A level is not counted; UCAS takes the A level only. An AS in a fourth subject you dropped after Year 12 does count.
  • A university decides whether it uses the Tariff at all. Many of the most selective courses make offers in grades and specific subjects ("AAA including Mathematics") and ignore points; others ask for a points total from a set number of qualifications ("112 points from three A levels"), which is not the same as any 112 points. Read the course page.
  • Not every qualification has Tariff points, and a university can still accept one that does not; being on the Tariff is also no guarantee that a course accepts it (T Levels and BTECs vary by course).
  • GCSEs are not on the Tariff. They appear in entry requirements separately (usually grade 4 or 5 in English and maths, and sometimes a specific grade in a subject).
  • Predicted grades. Offers are made on predicted grades, so the calculator with the predictions says what offers are realistic; the same calculation on results day says whether the offer is met. The A level grade boundaries page shows how many marks each grade took in June 2026.

What the totals say

In the 2026 results, 28.3 percent of A level results in England were A* or A, so a student whose three A levels are all at A or above (144 points and up) is in roughly the top quarter of each subject's entry; three Bs (120) is a little above the middle. On the UCAS Tariff a DMM in a BTEC Extended Diploma is 112, the same as BBC, and a Distinction T Level is 144, the same as AAA; whether a given university treats them as equal to those A levels is the question to ask its admissions team before applying, not after.

How we help with A levels and the UCAS year

1-on-1 online tutoring for A level maths, further maths, the sciences and English with UK after-school hours, with every past paper marked to the mark scheme and the grade boundaries, so a predicted grade becomes a result. The first 30-minute class is free: send the subjects and the predicted grades on WhatsApp or the contact page. The subject pages are A level maths, A level chemistry, A level physics and A level biology; the boundaries are on A level grade boundaries June 2026.

UCAS reviews the tables each year; the values for 2026 and 2027 entry are the same for the qualifications above.

Questions parents ask

1How many UCAS points is an A level worth?
On the UCAS Tariff for 2027 entry an A* is 56 points, an A is 48, a B is 40, a C is 32, a D is 24 and an E is 16. Three A levels at AAB are 136 points, ABB is 128, BBB is 120, BBC is 112 and CCC is 96. An AS level is worth less than half: A 20, B 16, C 12, D 10, E 6, and UCAS does not count an AS in a subject you then completed as a full A level.
2How many UCAS points is a BTEC worth?
The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (the three-A-level-sized course) is D*D*D* 168, D*D*D 160, D*DD 152, DDD 144, DDM 128, DMM 112, MMM 96, MMP 80, MPP 64 and PPP 48. The National Diploma (two A levels in size) is D*D* 112 down to PP 32, and the National Extended Certificate (one A level in size) is D* 56, D 48, M 32 and P 16. A DMM Extended Diploma equals BBC at A level.
3How many UCAS points is a T Level?
A full T Level is Distinction* 168, Distinction 144, Merit 120, Pass with a core grade of A* to C 96, and Pass with a core grade of D or E 72, the same as three A levels at A*A*A*, AAA, BBB, CCC and DDD respectively. Universities decide individually whether they accept T Levels for a given course.
4Does the EPQ count for UCAS points?
Yes: an Extended Project Qualification is A* 28, A 24, B 20, C 16, D 12 and E 8, half an A level at each grade. Many universities make a lower alternative offer to applicants with an A or A* in the EPQ, which is worth more than the points. Core Maths (the AQA Certificate in Mathematical Studies) is also on the Tariff at A 20, B 16, C 12, D 10, E 6.
