"Math tutor New York City" is typed with a test in mind: a 3rd grade parent looking at the spring state tests, a 7th grade parent who has just heard the letters SHSAT, a 9th grade parent after the first Algebra I Regents practice, a junior's parent who has seen an SAT tutor's rate card. This page gives the published New York prices in the fall of 2026 by who is teaching and by level, the Manhattan premium, what a semester costs, the five checks before paying anyone, and where we sit, because we publish our price and most New York tutors quote it only on the phone.

The prices per hour, fall 2026

Who is teaching Per hour What you get
College student on a marketplace (Wyzant, Preply, Care.com) $30 – $60 Homework help, someone who did well in the course recently; Care.com's listed average starting rate for a math tutor in New York is about $32
Certified teacher tutoring privately $60 – $100 Knows the New York State Next Generation standards and the Regents rubric; often a current or retired NYC public school teacher
Manhattan tutoring agency $100 – $200 Vetted tutors, scheduling, a director who matches; the agency keeps 40 to 60 per cent
SHSAT, Regents and SAT specialists $150 – $300+ Test-specific: pacing, the question types, a score history; the top Manhattan names go higher
Learning center (Mathnasium, Kumon, Sylvan) $250 – $450 a month Two to three group or rotating sessions a week, a set curriculum, a center to drive to
Science with Shobha, online 1-on-1 from India US$10 – $13 Master's-qualified tutor, your child's grade and test, the recording after every class

The broad New York range that survey sites quote, $40 to $150 an hour with most families paying $60 to $100, is consistent with this table: the middle of the market is a certified teacher at $60 to $100, and math and test prep sit at the top of every range.

The Manhattan premium

The same tutor charges more on the island. Manhattan agencies publish ranges of $100 to $200 an hour that would be $80 to $150 in Brooklyn, Queens or across the river in Jersey City and Hoboken, and families on the Upper East and Upper West Sides are quoted at the top of every band. The premium is travel time plus what the neighbourhood is used to paying; it is not a better tutor. Online tutoring erases it, which is the honest reason so many Manhattan families now use tutors who live in Westchester, Long Island, or, as with us, India.

Prices by level

Level Typical per hour What a good tutor does with the hour
Grades 3 to 5 (NY State math tests in spring) $40 – $80 Number sense and fractions to automatic; the test's multi-step word problems; no drilling for its own sake
Grades 6 to 7 $50 – $90 Ratios, proportional reasoning, negative numbers, the first equations; the gaps that decide algebra
Grade 8, SHSAT (specialized high schools test, fall) $60 – $300 The 57-question math section under time, the question types (ratios, geometry, algebra, data), full timed practice from the spring of 7th grade
Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II (Regents, June) $60 – $150 Past Regents papers on the board from the start of the year, marked to the state rubric; the constructed-response parts where the points are
Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics $80 – $200 The AP free-response style, the calculator and non-calculator sections, the May exam calendar
SAT math (digital SAT, adaptive) $80 – $300 The two modules, the Desmos calculator, the no-calculator habits; a baseline and a target score

The SHSAT is the New York anomaly, the same way the 11-plus is London's: an hour for a 13-year-old that costs more than an hour of AP Calculus, because the demand is concentrated into one test on one fall morning for eight schools.

What a semester costs

Sixteen weeks, one child, one subject.

One hour a week Two hours a week
Marketplace student at $45 $720 $1,440
Certified teacher at $80 $1,280 $2,560
Manhattan agency or specialist at $150 $2,400 $4,800
Learning center (group, monthly) $1,000 – $1,800
Science with Shobha at US$10 – $13 $160 – $208 $320 – $416

The outcome to price is a grade band in one course over a school year, or a score band on one test: about $2,500 to $5,000 with a certified New York teacher at one hour a week, about $400 with us.

Why the India-based class is US$10 to $13

Because the tutor lives in India, where a master's-qualified teacher's hour costs a fraction of a New York hour, and because there is no agency between you. The class has the same shape as the best Manhattan tutor's: one tutor, one child, a shared whiteboard, your child's grade and the New York State standards from the first lesson, Regents and SAT past papers marked to the real rubric with the points written on the script. It runs at 7 to 8:30 am before school and after 4 pm Eastern, and on weekend mornings, and every class is recorded. How it works is on the online tutors from India to the USA page; the New York page has the local detail, from Queens and Long Island to Jersey City and Edison.

The five checks before paying, at any price

  1. The course and the test, by name: "Algebra I Regents, June", "SHSAT, October", "digital SAT, March". A tutor who says "high school math" will teach the wrong thing.
  2. A degree in mathematics or a New York State certification in math, shown to you.
  3. A marked Regents or SAT paper from a current student, with the points on it.
  4. The same tutor to the exam, not a rotating roster.
  5. Monthly payment, no semester package paid up front.

Then take two trial classes in the same week, one local and one online, same child, same topic, and watch both. Pay for one month with the tutor the child worked hardest for.

Where to get help

A 1-on-1 online math class with a tutor who holds a master's in mathematics and has taught the US curriculum from Grade 3 to AP Calculus since 2018, at 7 to 8:30 am and after 4 pm New York time: the recording and notes after every class, about US$10 to $13 an hour, billed monthly, no contract. The New York page has the local details; the wider US price picture, by grade and by city, is in how much a math tutor costs per hour in the US; and the free 30-minute first class is a real lesson on this week's topic.

Questions parents ask

1How much does a math tutor cost in New York City?
Published rates in the fall of 2026: about $30 to $60 an hour for a college student on a marketplace (Wyzant, Preply, Care.com lists an average starting rate near $32), $60 to $100 for a certified teacher tutoring privately, $100 to $200 through a Manhattan tutoring agency, $150 to $300 and more for SHSAT, Regents and SAT specialists with a track record, and $250 to $450 a month for small-group sessions at a learning center. Online 1-on-1 from India with a master's-qualified tutor at Science with Shobha is about US$10 to $13 an hour.
2Is tutoring more expensive in Manhattan than in Brooklyn or Queens?
Yes, by roughly 20 per cent and often more for the same tutor, because of travel time and what Manhattan families are used to paying. A tutor who charges $80 in Queens or Jersey City will commonly quote $100 or more on the Upper East Side. Online tutoring removes the borough premium entirely, since nobody travels.
3How much does an SHSAT or Regents tutor cost in NYC?
SHSAT tutors (for the specialized high schools test in the fall of 8th grade) are the most expensive hour in New York for a 13-year-old: $150 to $300 with the specialist agencies, $60 to $120 privately. Regents tutoring (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II) runs $60 to $150 an hour depending on who is teaching; a certified NYC math teacher tutoring on the side is usually in the $70 to $100 range.
4Is online math tutoring cheaper than in person in New York?
By 20 to 40 per cent for the same New York tutor, who saves the subway ride, and by 80 to 90 per cent for an India-based tutor, because a master's-qualified teacher's hour in India costs a fraction of a Manhattan hour. The class is the same shape, one tutor and one child on a shared whiteboard, on the New York State standards, the Regents or the SAT, at 7 to 8:30 am before school and after 4 pm Eastern, and online adds the recording.
