"What math do you take in 11th grade" has three honest answers, because US schools run three tracks, and which one your child is on was decided in 7th or 8th grade when the school placed them in Algebra 1. This article names the three, explains what each course actually contains, shows the ladder so you can see where each leads, covers the Integrated Math version, and ends with how to choose when the school offers a choice, because junior year is the year the SAT and the college transcript both land.

Most 11th graders in the US are in Algebra 2. It is not the remedial option; it is the track, and Algebra 2 is the highest course most colleges require for admission.
What each 11th grade course actually contains
Algebra 2. Functions as objects: quadratics revisited, polynomial functions and their graphs, rational expressions and functions, radicals and rational exponents, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, sequences and series, an introduction to trigonometry (the unit circle in some states), and probability and statistics basics. The idea that makes or breaks the year is the function: input, output, domain, range, transformations. A child who learned Algebra 1 as "solve for x" and never as "what does this equation describe" hits the wall in October.
Pre-Calculus (and AP Precalculus). Everything Algebra 2 introduced, taken further: polynomial and rational functions in depth, exponential and logarithmic modelling, the full trigonometry (unit circle, identities, inverse functions, the law of sines and cosines), polar coordinates, vectors, matrices, sequences and series, limits as a preview of calculus. AP Precalculus, launched by the College Board in 2023, is the same course with an exam in May and college credit at some universities; more schools offer it each year.
AP Calculus AB / BC. Limits, derivatives and their applications, integrals and the fundamental theorem, differential equations (AB); BC adds series, parametric and polar functions, and more integration techniques. A junior taking this has already done Pre-Calculus in 10th grade.
Statistics / AP Statistics. Data collection and design, descriptive statistics, probability, sampling distributions, inference (confidence intervals, hypothesis tests), regression. The alternative to Pre-Calculus for a junior who has finished Algebra 2, and the better choice for a student heading toward social sciences, business, biology, nursing or data-heavy majors. AP Statistics is widely accepted for credit.
Integrated Math 3. The Algebra 2 content plus the Geometry and Statistics strands interleaved, in the states that chose the integrated pathway. It leads to the same Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus in 12th.
Why junior year is the year that counts
Two things happen in 11th grade math that happen in no other year.
The SAT is taken in the spring of junior year by most students (the PSAT in the autumn). Its math section is Algebra 1, Algebra 2, a little Geometry and a few data questions: an 11th grader in Algebra 2 is learning the test's content and sitting the test in the same year, which is efficient if the course is going well and a disaster if it is not. Pre-Calculus students find the SAT easy; Algebra 2 students should start SAT math practice by January.
The transcript colleges read when applications go in during the autumn of 12th grade ends with junior year. The course name and the grade are both read: an A in Algebra 2 on the standard track reads well; a C in Pre-Calculus on the accelerated track reads worse than the A, and selective colleges also look for "the most rigorous course available", which is why the choice below matters.
How to choose, when there is a choice
Schools decide the track, but juniors often have a choice between Pre-Calculus and Statistics, or between honors and regular, or between AP Precalculus and the school's own Pre-Calculus.

Do not choose a course to look good. Choose the course the child will get an A or B in with effort; a course above that produces a worse grade and a worse year.

A 1-on-1 online class with a tutor who holds a master's in mathematics and has taught the US sequence since 2018: Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Precalculus, AP Calculus and AP Statistics, in the school's order, a unit ahead of the class, with SAT math from January of junior year for Algebra 2 students. Before school (7 am Eastern is 4:30 pm for the tutor), after school or weekends, US time; the recording and notes after every class; the same tutor into 12th grade. US$10 to $13 an hour, billed monthly.
