KS2 and KS3 maths at a British school in the Netherlands: year by year for Indian parents

At the British School of Amsterdam and the other British-curriculum schools in the Netherlands, your child follows the English National Curriculum: Key Stage 2 in Years 3 to 6 and Key Stage 3 in Years 7 to 9, then IGCSE. Of all the international programmes it is the one closest in feel to CBSE, which is why many Indian families choose it, and it still has a different order, a different emphasis and a faster Key Stage 3 than parents expect. This guide goes year by year: what is expected, which CBSE class it matches, and where a child from India lands ahead or behind.

How the years line up

The year number is one ahead of the CBSE class, so a child arriving from Class 4 in India joins Year 5, by age. Content-wise the two systems are close in KS2 and diverge in KS3, where the British curriculum moves faster.

Key Stage 2: Years 3 to 6

Year 3. Place value to 1,000, column addition and subtraction, the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, fractions as parts of a whole and simple equivalent fractions, telling the time to the minute, perimeter, and bar charts. A child from Class 2 in India will be comfortable; the column methods are familiar.

Year 4. Numbers to 10,000, all times tables to 12 x 12 fluent, formal multiplication of a two-digit by a one-digit number and short division, decimals to two places, equivalent fractions, area by counting squares, and coordinates in the first quadrant. In England there is a multiplication tables check this year, and every British school expects the tables to 12 by the end of Year 4. Children from India are usually ahead here.

Year 5. Numbers to a million, long multiplication, short division with remainders, adding and subtracting fractions with the same and related denominators, decimals and percentages as equivalents, area and perimeter of rectangles, angles measured in degrees, line graphs. This is where the Indian lead in arithmetic is largest and where explaining and problem solving start to count against a child who only writes answers.

Year 6. The end of primary: long division, the order of operations, all four operations with fractions, ratio and proportion, the first algebra (simple formulas and missing numbers), area of triangles and parallelograms, volume, the mean, and pie charts. In England this is the SATs year; British schools abroad usually assess their own way. In content, Year 6 is close to a CBSE Class 5 with a little Class 6 added.

Key Stage 3: Years 7 to 9

This is where the pace changes and where Indian parents are most often surprised.

Year 7. Negative numbers with all operations, factors, multiples and primes, algebra as a proper topic (expressions, simplifying, substituting), sequences and the rule for the nth term, coordinates in four quadrants and straight-line graphs, percentages of amounts, angles on lines and in triangles, area of compound shapes, probability as a scale from 0 to 1. Much of this is CBSE Class 6 and 7 done in one year.

Year 8. Solving linear equations with unknowns on both sides, expanding and factorising, ratio and direct proportion, fractions, decimals and percentages at speed including percentage change, transformations (reflection, rotation, translation, enlargement), circles (circumference and area), volume of prisms, averages from tables, scatter graphs. Indian children will find the equations easy and the transformations and data handling new.

Year 9. The bridge to IGCSE: simultaneous equations, inequalities, quadratic expressions and the first quadratic equations, Pythagoras and the introduction of trigonometry, standard form, compound interest, similar shapes, more probability including tree diagrams. Schools decide in Year 9 whether a child will sit the IGCSE Core or Extended paper, and that decision is made largely on Year 9 results. Year 9 is the KS3 year that matters most.

Where a child from India is ahead and behind

Ahead: written arithmetic and mental speed, tables, fractions, and algebraic manipulation, especially in Years 7 and 8 where CBSE Class 6 to 8 algebra is more demanding than the British equivalent.

Behind: graphs and coordinates, transformations, data handling and statistics, probability, and the "problem solving and reasoning" strand that runs through every British year and every test. British marking gives most marks for method and reasoning; a child who has learnt to write the answer and nothing else loses marks on questions they can do. That is the single most common thing we fix with new arrivals.

Being ready for IGCSE

IGCSE maths (Cambridge 0580 or 0980, or Pearson Edexcel) is taught in Years 10 and 11 and examined at 16. The Extended paper leads to the top grades and to A-Level maths; the Core paper caps at a grade 5 (or C). Two things make the difference by the end of Year 9: fluent algebra including quadratics, and the habit of showing a full method. A child who has both walks into Extended. What we do for British-school students

We follow the school's scheme of work a topic ahead, in the language of the National Curriculum, with the reasoning and problem-solving strand built into every session because that is where the marks are. In KS2 we keep the arithmetic lead while adding the explaining. In KS3 we go at the British pace and add depth where CBSE would, so that Year 9 ends with the algebra and the working that put a child into IGCSE Extended. For families who may return to India, the same content is close enough to CBSE Classes 6 to 9 that the door stays open.

Questions parents ask

1Which Year is my child in at a British school?
British years run a year ahead of CBSE classes in name: a child who is 7 at the start of September is in Year 3, which is CBSE Class 2 by age. Year 6 is age 10 to 11 (Class 5), Year 9 is age 13 to 14 (Class 8), and IGCSE courses run in Years 10 and 11.
2Do British schools abroad take the KS2 SATs?
Usually not. The Year 6 SATs are a requirement for schools in England; British schools in the Netherlands typically use their own assessments or standardised tests such as CAT4 or GL Progress Tests. Ask the school which it uses.
3What is the multiplication tables check?
A short online check of tables up to 12 x 12 taken in Year 4 in England. British schools abroad may or may not run it, but every one of them expects the tables to 12 to be fluent by the end of Year 4.
4When does IGCSE maths start?
The IGCSE course is taught in Years 10 and 11 with the exams at the end of Year 11, age 16. Schools decide in Year 9 whether a child sits the Core or Extended paper, so Year 9 results matter more than they look.
