MYP science surprises Indian families in the same way MYP maths does, and for the same reason: the child knows the content, gets the tests right, and the grade says 5. In science the mechanism is even clearer, because half the grade is decided by investigations and lab reports, formats that a CBSE science course rarely asks a child to produce before Class 9. This post explains the four criteria, walks through a level 7 to 8 lab report section by section, and lists the words and habits that separate a 5 from a 7.
The four criteria
Criterion A: Knowing and understanding. Content, applied to familiar and unfamiliar situations, including analysing information to make scientifically supported judgements. Tests and end-of-unit assessments.
Criterion B: Inquiring and designing. The planning half of an investigation: explain a problem or question, state a testable hypothesis using scientific reasoning, identify the variables, and design a method that could actually produce the data.
Criterion C: Processing and evaluating. The analysis half: present and process data correctly, interpret it and explain the results with scientific reasoning, evaluate the hypothesis against the results, evaluate the method, and suggest improvements.
Criterion D: Reflecting on the impacts of science. A written piece, often an essay or a report, on how science addresses a real issue, with a discussion of the factors involved (ethical, economic, environmental, social) and correct use of scientific language, with sources cited.
Each criterion is scored 0 to 8 in bands of 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and 7 to 8. The four best-fit levels add to a total out of 32 and convert to the 1 to 7 grade with the same boundaries as maths, which we set out in MYP maths criteria A to D: 28 to 32 is a 7, 24 to 27 a 6, 19 to 23 a 5.
The arithmetic tells the story. Level 8 on A and level 5 on B, C and D is 23, a grade 5. Level 7 on all four is 28, a grade 7. Content cannot carry a child past a 5 on its own.
What a level 7 to 8 investigation looks like
Most of criteria B and C are assessed on one document: the lab report. Here is what each section has to contain for the top band, with the rubric language.
Research question. Specific, with the independent and dependent variables in it. Not "does temperature affect enzymes" but "how does the temperature of the water bath, from 20 to 60 degrees Celsius, affect the time taken for 2 g of amylase to break down a starch solution".
Hypothesis with reasoning. A prediction plus the science behind it. The "because" is what lifts level 4 to level 6 or above: "the rate will rise up to about 40 degrees because molecules collide more often, and fall above it because the enzyme denatures".
Variables. Independent, dependent, and controlled variables, each with how it is controlled or measured. A table is fine. Missing the controlled variables caps criterion B.
Method. Numbered steps someone else could follow, the equipment with sizes and precision, the range and number of values of the independent variable, the number of repeats, and the safety points. "Repeat three times and take the mean" needs to be in the method, not remembered afterwards.
Data. A table with headings and units, raw data and processed data (means, rates), to a consistent number of decimal places. Then a graph of the right type, labelled axes with units, a line of best fit where appropriate. This is where careless children lose a level on criterion C for nothing.
Interpretation. What the data shows, in numbers ("the time fell from 180 s at 20 degrees to 45 s at 40 degrees, then rose to 300 s at 60 degrees"), followed by the science that explains the pattern.
Evaluation of the hypothesis. Was it supported, refuted, or partly supported, and by which data. Say it in one sentence.
Evaluation of the method. Specific weaknesses (not "human error"): the water bath varied by 3 degrees, the end point was judged by eye, only three temperatures below 40 were tested. For each, whether it caused random or systematic error and in which direction.
Improvements. One improvement per weakness, realistic and specific: a thermostatic bath, a colorimeter to detect the end point, five temperatures between 20 and 40. This last section is where the top band is decided and where most children write two lines.
The words examiners want
MYP science has a vocabulary, and using it correctly is not decoration; it is how the marker recognises the strand. Independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variable. Hypothesis, prediction, justification. Precision, accuracy, reliability, validity, and the difference between them. Random error, systematic error. Anomalous result. Mean, range, trend, correlation. Supported, refuted. Reflect, evaluate, justify. We give students a one-page list and expect every report to use it.
The habits that move a 5 to a 7
Write the hypothesis with a because. Every time.
Name the variables before touching the equipment. Children who plan the variables first design better methods and write better reports.
Process before you interpret. Mean, then graph, then sentence. Reports that jump to the conclusion skip criterion C strands.
Evaluate specifically. "Human error" is a level 3 phrase. A named weakness with its direction of effect is a level 7 phrase.
Treat criterion D as science, not as an essay. Structure, sources, scientific language, and a real discussion of at least two kinds of factor. Indian students often write it as a general studies essay and lose the science strands.
Ask for the rubric with every task. Schools give it. A child who reads the level 7 to 8 descriptors before writing produces a different report.
What we do in MYP science
We do not re-teach the school's unit. We take the unit the child is in and produce one investigation cycle from it: research question, hypothesis, variables, method, and, using the school's data or our own, the processing, interpretation and evaluation, written to the top band and checked against the rubric line by line. After three or four cycles the structure is automatic and the grade moves. Criterion A we keep sharp with unfamiliar-situation questions, and criterion D we practise as a structured piece with sources.
