"How long do GCSEs last" means two different things, and students ask both: how long is each exam, and how long is the whole exam season. The paper lengths matter for revision (a student who has never written for two hours straight is going to struggle in English literature Paper 2) and for the timetable (two papers on one day is common). The season length matters for planning everything else. This guide gives the paper lengths subject by subject for the main boards, the longest papers, the total hours a typical student sits, the 2027 season dates, and how to build the stamina the long papers need.

Paper lengths by subject

Lengths are for AQA unless stated; Pearson Edexcel and OCR are the same or within a few minutes except where shown. Check the board's own timetable for the exact paper, because a handful of papers changed length for 2026.

Subject Papers Each Total
Maths (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) 3: Paper 1 non-calculator, Papers 2 and 3 calculator 1 h 30 4 h 30
English language (AQA) 2 1 h 45 3 h 30
English literature (AQA) 2: Paper 1 (Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel) 1 h 45; Paper 2 (modern texts and poetry) 2 h 15 4 h 00
Combined science: Trilogy (AQA) 6: two each in biology, chemistry, physics 1 h 15 (Pearson 1 h 10) 7 h 30
Separate sciences (AQA) 2 per science 1 h 45 3 h 30 per science, 10 h 30 for all three
History (AQA) 2 2 h 00 4 h 00
History (Pearson Edexcel) 3 Paper 1 1 h 20; Paper 2 1 h 50; Paper 3 1 h 30 4 h 40
History (OCR B) 3 1 h 00 to 1 h 45 about 4 h
Geography (AQA) 3 about 1 h 30 4 h 30
French, Spanish, German (foundation / higher) 4: listening about 35 to 45 min; speaking 7 to 12 min (conducted by the teacher, usually in April or May); reading 45 min to 1 h; writing 1 h to 1 h 20 about 2 h 30 to 3 h 15
Computer science (AQA) 2 2 h 00 4 h 00
Religious studies (AQA A) 2 1 h 45 3 h 30
Business (AQA) 2 1 h 45 3 h 30
Design and technology (AQA) 1 written 2 h 00 2 h plus the coursework project
Art and design 1 supervised practical 10 hours over several sessions 10 h plus the portfolio
PE (AQA) 2 written 1 h 15 2 h 30 plus practical assessment
Drama (AQA) 1 written 1 h 45 plus performances
Music (AQA) 1 listening and appraising 1 h 30 plus performance and composition

The pattern: almost every written paper is between 1 hour and 2 hours 15 minutes; the sciences spread their time over many shorter papers; the humanities concentrate it in fewer, longer ones.

The longest GCSE exams

  • AQA English literature Paper 2: 2 hours 15 minutes, the longest single sitting in the common subjects, with four tasks (a modern text, an anthology poetry comparison, and two unseen poems).
  • 2-hour papers: AQA history (both papers), AQA computer science (both papers), AQA design and technology, some OCR and Eduqas papers.
  • Art and design: a 10-hour supervised assessment, taken in blocks of two or three hours over several days, which is the longest assessment in the GCSE but is practical work, not a written sitting.

How many hours a student sits in total

Subjects Approximate written exam time
The core (maths, English language, English literature, combined science) about 19 h 30
Plus a language, history or geography, and one more option about 28 to 32 h
Separate sciences instead of combined add about 3 h

So a typical student with nine GCSEs sits around 25 to 30 hours of exams across the six weeks, usually 18 to 24 separate papers. Two papers on one day (morning and afternoon) happens several times; three does not.

How long the season is

The exam boards share one timetable, agreed through JCQ. In 2027 the common GCSE timetable runs from Monday 10 May to Friday 18 June, about six weeks, with Wednesday 23 June held as a contingency day in case of national disruption (students must stay available until then). The first week is usually light (languages, RS, some paper 1s); the heaviest fortnight is mid to late May, when maths, English and the sciences cluster; most students finish by the second week of June. Results are published on Thursday 19 August 2027. Our guide to the GCSE exam dates 2027 has the timetable and what to do if two exams clash.

Students are usually on study leave from the start of the series, so "how long do GCSEs last" in the sense of the whole thing is six weeks of exams after roughly two years of courses, and then a nine-week wait for results.

Extra time and other access arrangements

Students with an assessed need (dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, a processing-speed difficulty, a medical or mental-health condition, or a physical disability) can have access arrangements: most often 25% extra time (a 1 hour 30 paper becomes 1 hour 52), and also rest breaks, a reader, a scribe, a word processor or a separate room. The school applies to JCQ with evidence of need and of the arrangement being the student's normal way of working; applications are made in Year 10 or early Year 11, not in the exam weeks. Ask the SENCO early.

Building stamina for the long papers

Most students have never written continuously for two hours before Year 11, and the second hour of a literature or history paper is where marks are lost to tiredness and rushed answers. What helps:

  1. Timed full papers from February, at the real length, at the real time of day. Not sections: whole papers.
  2. A time plan per paper, written on the first page: for English literature Paper 2, about 45 minutes for the modern text, 45 for the anthology poetry, 45 for unseen poetry, with five minutes to check.
  3. Handwriting practice for students who type everything; two hours of handwriting is physically tiring if it is not practised.
  4. Two papers in a day, once, in the mock period, so the first time it happens is not in May.
  5. Sleep, food and water in the exam weeks matter more than an extra hour of revision the night before a long paper.

Our GCSE classes run timed past papers with the student from February, marked to the mark scheme, so that the length of each paper is familiar before the real thing. A master's-qualified teacher, 1-on-1, from about ยฃ8 to ยฃ10 an hour, every class recorded; the first class is free, and the GCSE tutors page has the subjects and the UK class times.

Questions parents ask

1How long do GCSE exams last?
Most GCSE papers are between 1 hour and 2 hours 15 minutes. Maths papers are 1 hour 30 minutes each (three papers); English language papers 1 hour 45 (two papers); combined science papers 1 hour 15 (six papers, Pearson 1 hour 10); separate science papers 1 hour 45 (two per science); history papers between 1 hour and 2 hours depending on the board; geography papers about 1 hour 30; languages have four shorter papers from about 35 minutes to 1 hour 20; computer science papers up to 2 hours. A student with nine GCSEs sits roughly 25 to 30 hours of exams in all.
2How long is the GCSE exam season?
About six weeks. In 2027 the common timetable runs from Monday 10 May to Friday 18 June, with Wednesday 23 June kept as a contingency day. Most students have their heaviest weeks in mid to late May and finish by mid June.
3What is the longest GCSE exam?
Among the common subjects, AQA English literature Paper 2 (2 hours 15 minutes) and the 2-hour papers in AQA history, computer science and some design and technology specifications. Art and design has a 10-hour supervised "exam" spread over several sessions, which is the longest assessment of all but is coursework-style practical work rather than a sitting.
4How long is the GCSE maths exam?
1 hour 30 minutes per paper, three papers (Paper 1 non-calculator, Papers 2 and 3 calculator), 4 hours 30 minutes in all, at AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. Each paper is 80 marks (AQA and Edexcel) or 100 (OCR).
5Can you get extra time in GCSE exams?
Yes, as an access arrangement for students with a diagnosed need (for example a processing speed difficulty, dyslexia, ADHD or a medical condition), applied for by the school through JCQ. The usual allowance is 25% extra time; a 1 hour 30 paper becomes 1 hour 52. Applications need evidence and must be made well before the exam series, so ask the school's SENCO in Year 10.
