What 1-on-1 means here

Private 1 on 1 online tutoring that sees every line your child writes

"1 on 1" is the most used and least kept promise in online tutoring. A group class of six is sold as personal; a video call where the tutor cannot see the child's working is sold as live; a pool of tutors who change every month is sold as a relationship. Here it means one thing: one tutor with a master's degree in the subject, one student, on a shared whiteboard, the same tutor every week, with the recording of every class in the parent's inbox afterwards.

The research on tutoring is unusually clear that this is the form that works: one tutor with one student or at most two or three, a trained tutor rather than a helper, the school's own curriculum, and regular sessions over months. Every class here is built that way: a five-minute recap, the new idea taught with diagrams in the order the school teaches it, guided practice where the tutor watches every step, then notes, an assignment and the recording. The first class is a diagnosis, and the plan after it names the gap.

The honest comparison

1-on-1 live tutoring against the other things sold as tutoring

What it isWhat the child getsWhat it is good for
Group online class (4 to 10 students)One pace for everyone; the child who is behind stays behindPractice once the gap is closed; the price
Recorded course or appNo tutor; nobody sees the child's workingExtra practice for a confident student
Homework help serviceSomeone solves tonight's problem; nothing is learnedNothing, for a child who is behind
Marketplace tutor (profiles, hourly)Quality varies; a student or part-time teacher; no continuity if they leaveA one-off session with a specialist
Private 1-on-1 live tutoring, the same qualified tutor every weekThe class is built on the child's own gap; every line of working seen; the relationship that makes a child willing to be wrongClosing a gap, raising a grade, an exam year, rebuilding confidence

The last row is this page. The honest caveat: a tutor abroad is only the right choice if she teaches your child's own curriculum and exam board in its own order, which ours do, and which you can check in the free class by asking what the next unit is.

what we teach 1-on-1

๐Ÿ“š Subjects, Grade 1 to the final exams

how a class runs

๐Ÿ•’ Sixty minutes, one child

  • Five minutes: last week's homework, marked aloud
  • Ten minutes: the new idea with diagrams, in the school's order
  • Thirty minutes: the child works on the whiteboard; the tutor watches every line
  • Ten minutes: the school's own homework started together
  • After class: the recording, notes and the marked work to the parent

For a child under 8 the class is 30 minutes with a parent alongside. Slots are in your time zone: before school, after school and weekend mornings.

Knowledge base

Parents ask

1What is 1 on 1 online tutoring?
One tutor teaching one student live over a video call with a shared whiteboard, so the tutor sees every line the student writes as they write it. It differs from a group class (several students, one pace), from a recorded course (no tutor), and from homework help (someone solves the problem for the child). In a 1-on-1 class the student does most of the work and the tutor diagnoses, explains, watches and corrects.
2Is 1 on 1 online tutoring better than group tutoring?
For closing a gap or raising a grade, yes, and the research on tutoring is clear about it: the largest effects come from one tutor with one student or at most two or three, by a trained tutor, several times a week. A group of six or eight is a small classroom, and the child who is behind is behind in it too. Group classes cost less per hour and suit practice once the gap is closed.
3How is private 1 on 1 online tutoring different from a marketplace tutor?
The tutor. On a marketplace you choose from thousands of profiles, mostly students and part-time teachers, and the platform does not check teaching. Here the tutors are a named team of women educators with master's degrees in their subjects, teaching since 2018, and the same tutor stays with the child across the year. The class also comes with the recording, notes and marked homework, which marketplace tutors rarely provide.
4What does 1 on 1 math tutoring online look like?
Sixty minutes on a shared whiteboard: the week's homework marked aloud, the new idea taught with diagrams in the order the school teaches it, guided practice where the tutor watches every step, and the school's own homework started together. From Grade 1 number work through Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus and AP Calculus, or the equivalent in the UK, Australian, IB, IGCSE and CBSE systems.
5How much does 1 on 1 online tutoring cost?
US$10 to $13 an hour for families in the United States, with the equivalent in other currencies on the table on this page and the full table on the pricing page. That is a master's-qualified teacher at the price of a university student, with the recording of every class, notes and marked homework included, billed monthly with no package and no contract.
6Is the first class free?
Yes. A 30-minute 1-on-1 lesson on the whiteboard on your child's current topic, at a time in your time zone, with you in the room. After it we send a short plan and the exact rate, and you decide. No card, no obligation.
7Who are the tutors, and is it safe?
A team of 20+ women educators, each with a master's degree in her subject, teaching online from Chandigarh since 2018. Every class is recorded and the recording is yours, parents are welcome in every class, and the tutor never contacts the child outside the class. The eight checks a parent should make before any online tutoring are in our article on whether online tutoring is safe, linked below.
8Which countries and time zones?
The United States and Canada (7 am before school, after 4 pm, and weekend mornings), the UK and Ireland (4 to 8 pm), Australia and New Zealand (after school, which is late morning in India), the UAE (4 to 7 pm), the Netherlands and Italy, and India. Each country page shows the slots in local time.
