"When is calculus taught in Canada" is asked by parents who moved from another system and want to know whether their child is ahead or behind, and by Grade 9 and 10 students choosing courses. The short answer is Grade 12, as an elective, in every province but Quebec, where it comes at CEGEP. The useful answer is which course, with which prerequisite, because in every province the door to Grade 12 calculus is opened or closed by a course choice two years earlier.
Province by province
Course names are those published by each ministry of education; schools sometimes add their own numbering, so check the school's course calendar.
| Province | Calculus course | Grade | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) | 12 | Advanced Functions (MHF4U), before or in the same year |
| British Columbia | Calculus 12 | 12 | Pre-Calculus 12, before or alongside (Pre-Calculus 11 before that) |
| Alberta | Mathematics 31 | 12 | Mathematics 30-1, before or alongside |
| Saskatchewan | Calculus 30 | 12 | Pre-Calculus 30 |
| Manitoba | Introduction to Calculus 45S | 12 | Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S, before or alongside |
| Quebec | Calculus I at CEGEP (pre-university Science and some Social Science profiles) | After Secondary V | Secondary V mathematics, Technical and Scientific or Science option |
| Nova Scotia | Calculus 12 | 12 | Pre-Calculus 12 |
| New Brunswick | Calculus 120 | 12 | Pre-Calculus B 120 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | Calculus 3208 | 12 | Mathematics 3200, before or alongside |
| Prince Edward Island | Calculus (MAT611B) | 12 | MAT621B |
Two patterns hold everywhere. Calculus is the last course in the "pre-calculus" or "academic/university" stream, not the applied or workplace stream. And a student in the applied stream in Grade 10 cannot reach it without taking a bridging course.
What the Grade 12 course covers
Limits and rates of change; derivatives of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions; the product, quotient and chain rules; curve sketching and optimisation; related rates. Ontario adds vectors, lines and planes in three dimensions as half the course. British Columbia, Alberta and the Atlantic provinces include an introduction to integration. It is roughly the first two-thirds of a university Calculus I course, or the differential part of AP Calculus AB.
Quebec is different
Quebec secondary school ends at Secondary V, the equivalent of Grade 11. Students then attend CEGEP for two years before university. Calculus I (differential calculus) and Calculus II (integral calculus) are first-year CEGEP courses in the Science program, and Calculus I is part of several Social Science and Commerce profiles. To be admitted to those programs a student needs the stronger Secondary V mathematics option: Technical and Scientific (TS) or Science (SN), not Cultural, Social and Technical (CST). So in Quebec the deciding choice is made at the end of Secondary III, when the Secondary IV math sequence is chosen.
Which university programs want it
| Program | Calculus in high school |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Required almost everywhere (in Ontario, MCV4U is on every engineering admission list) |
| Physical sciences, mathematics, computer science | Required or strongly recommended |
| Life sciences, health sciences | Often required or recommended; check each university |
| Business, commerce, economics | Required at many universities; at others any Grade 12 university math |
| Arts and humanities | Not required |
"Recommended" in an admission guide usually means the first-year university calculus course assumes it. A student admitted without it takes a slower version in first year or struggles in the standard one.
Where AP and IB fit
Some Canadian schools offer Advanced Placement Calculus AB or BC, taken in Grade 12 (occasionally Grade 11), with an exam in May that many universities accept for first-year credit. International Baccalaureate schools teach calculus inside Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches over Grades 11 and 12. Neither replaces the provincial credit unless the school says so; ask whether the AP or IB course also grants the provincial calculus credit.
The choices that decide it, two years earlier
| Province | The choice that keeps calculus open |
|---|---|
| Ontario | Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics (MPM2D), then Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U), not Functions and Applications (MCF3M) |
| British Columbia | Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10, then Pre-Calculus 11, not Workplace Mathematics |
| Alberta | Mathematics 10C, then 20-1, not 20-2 or 20-3 |
| Saskatchewan, Manitoba | The Pre-Calculus stream from Grade 11, not Foundations or Workplace and Apprenticeship |
| Quebec | The TS or SN sequence in Secondary IV, not CST |
A student who is unsure should take the stronger stream. It is always possible to move down a stream later; moving up costs a summer course or a year.
For families arriving from another country
| Coming from | Where the child usually is relative to Canada |
|---|---|
| India (CBSE, ICSE) | Calculus starts in Class 11, a year earlier than Canada; a Class 10 student is typically ahead in algebra and behind in the vocabulary of word problems and in graphing technology |
| United States | The same timing as the accelerated US track: calculus in the final year |
| United Kingdom | Differentiation and integration begin in Year 12 A-level, a year earlier |
Schools place by age and by the previous report card, and they often place cautiously. If your child has completed Class 10 mathematics in India, ask for the Grade 11 academic or pre-calculus course and offer to sit a placement test. Being put in the applied stream by default is the most common placement mistake we see, and it closes calculus without anyone saying so.
Is my child on track? Four checks in Grade 10
- The course is the academic or pre-calculus stream, by name.
- The mark is above about 75 percent; below that, the Grade 11 course is a struggle.
- Factoring quadratics and working with fractions are quick and accurate.
- The Grade 11 and 12 courses are chosen on paper, so the prerequisite chain is complete.
Where to get help
A 1-on-1 online math class with a tutor who holds a master's in mathematics and teaches the Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta sequences from Grade 9 to Calculus and Vectors, Calculus 12 and Mathematics 31: the course taught a unit ahead of the school, tests marked to the school's rubric, at after-school time in your province, about C$14 to C$18 an hour. How it works for families in Canada is on the online tutors from India to Canada page; the US version of this ladder is in what grade do you take calculus. The free 30-minute first class is a real lesson on this week's topic.
