Article 224 ยท Gulf

The five Gulf countries outside the UAE have the same tuition market in miniature: large Indian-curriculum schools, British and IB schools for the rest, a shortage of qualified tutors, licensing rules that are enforced in waves, and prices that vary by who the tutor is. "Online tuition in Qatar", "tuition teacher" in Saudi Arabia and "home tuition in Bahrain" are the phrases families type. This guide covers all five countries: what tuition costs at home and at a centre in each currency, the rules, the schools, the class times from India (which suit the Gulf better than any other region), and the online 1-on-1 price. We teach online from India, so we are one of the options; we have kept to published rates and say where a local tutor is the better choice.

What tuition costs, country by country

Per hour, 1-on-1 at home, from rates published by tutors and agencies in 2026; centre fees per subject per month for group classes.

Country Student or unlicensed tutor Qualified teacher IB, IGCSE, A-level specialist Tuition centre, per subject per month
Qatar (Doha) QAR 80 to 150 QAR 150 to 250 QAR 250 to 400 QAR 600 to 1,500
Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam) SAR 60 to 120 SAR 100 to 250 SAR 250 to 400 SAR 500 to 1,500
Bahrain (Manama) BHD 5 to 8 BHD 8 to 20 BHD 20 to 35 BHD 50 to 120
Kuwait KWD 5 to 8 KWD 8 to 20 KWD 20 to 35 KWD 50 to 120
Oman (Muscat) OMR 4 to 8 OMR 8 to 20 OMR 20 to 30 OMR 40 to 100

The pattern is the same everywhere: a qualified teacher costs the equivalent of US$30 to US$70 an hour, a specialist US$70 to US$110, and a centre US$150 to US$400 a month for a group. The ranges are from published rate cards and tutor listings, not a full survey; a quote is the only exact figure.

The rules

Private tuition is regulated in all five countries, and enforcement comes in waves (usually after a news story about teachers tutoring their own students or unlicensed centres):

  • Oman: the Ministry of Education bars school teachers from paid private tuition to their own students and licenses tuition centres; our Oman guide covers the rule in detail.
  • Saudi Arabia: tuition centres need a Ministry of Education licence; home tutoring by school teachers for their own students is prohibited, and unlicensed centres have been closed in periodic campaigns.
  • Qatar: centres are licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education; teachers at state schools are restricted from private tuition.
  • Kuwait: similar: licensed centres, restrictions on state-school teachers, periodic enforcement against unlicensed home tutors.
  • Bahrain: licensed centres through the Ministry of Education; home tuition is common and lightly enforced.

Online tuition from a company outside the country (India, the UK) is a service bought from abroad: the tutor is not working in the country and the local licensing does not apply. What the family should check instead is the company's qualification and recording policy, which is the next section.

The schools, and why tuition is needed

Most Indian families in these countries are in the CBSE schools: the International Indian Schools in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam; the Indian School Bahrain and the newer CBSE schools; the Indian schools of Kuwait by area (Salmiya, Khaitan, Fahaheel, Abbasiya); the Indian School Muscat and the other Oman Indian schools; in Qatar, DPS Modern Indian School, Birla Public School, Ideal Indian School and others. Sections of 35 to 45 are normal, the board exams are the same papers on the same dates as in India, and tuition from Class 8 is routine. Our guides to the Indian schools in Riyadh and Jeddah, Kuwait and Bahrain cover the schools and fees.

The rest are in British-curriculum schools (IGCSE and A-level), American-curriculum schools and IB schools, where the tutoring need is IGCSE and IB maths and sciences, and the local specialist rates above apply.

Class times from India: why the Gulf is the easiest region

Country Behind India by A 5 pm local class is, in India A 7 pm local class
Oman 1.5 hours 6:30 pm 8:30 pm
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait 2.5 hours 7:30 pm 9:30 pm

Every after-school hour in the Gulf is an ordinary Indian evening, so the same teacher can take the same slot all year; there are no 6 am classes as in North America and no midnight ones as in the UK. Friday and Saturday weekends in the Gulf are handled by tutors who work Indian weekends.

What to check in an online tutor

  1. The teacher's qualification in the subject (a master's for senior classes) and years teaching the board (CBSE, IGCSE, IB).
  2. A free trial at the real time, on the child's current chapter, with you in the room.
  3. Recordings of every class, sent to you.
  4. The same tutor all year, in writing, and what happens if they leave.
  5. Billing monthly in your currency, no package, with the cancellation terms stated.
  6. Board-exam practice: sample papers from Class 9 and pre-boards from December for CBSE; past papers for IGCSE and IB.

The online 1-on-1 price in each currency

Science with Shobha's classes are US$10 to $13 an hour, billed monthly in the local currency at the day's rate: about QAR 37 to 47, SAR 38 to 49, BHD 3.8 to 4.9, KWD 3 to 4 and OMR 4 to 5 an hour, for a master's-qualified teacher, 1-on-1, in CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IB and the American curriculum, with every class recorded and the homework marked. That is a fifth to a tenth of a qualified local tutor's hour and a fraction of a centre month, with the whole hour on one child. The country pages have the class times and the schools we see most: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, Jeddah, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. The first class is free. For the UAE, see our guide to home tuition fees in Sharjah, Dubai, Ajman and Abu Dhabi.

Questions parents ask

1How much does a tuition teacher cost in Qatar?
From the rates tutors and agencies publish in Doha, about QAR 80 to 150 an hour for a university student or unlicensed tutor, QAR 150 to 250 for a qualified teacher, and QAR 250 to 400 for IB and IGCSE specialists. Tuition centres charge QAR 600 to 1,500 a month per subject for group classes. Online 1-on-1 from a master's-qualified teacher in India is about QAR 37 to 47 an hour.
2How much is online tuition in Saudi Arabia?
Local tutors in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam publish about SAR 100 to 250 an hour for a qualified teacher and SAR 60 to 120 for a student tutor; the international Indian schools' own after-school classes are cheaper but large. Online 1-on-1 from India is about SAR 38 to 49 an hour at Science with Shobha, with the class at a Gulf afternoon or evening hour.
3Is private tuition allowed in Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia?
Each country regulates it differently. Oman's Ministry of Education bars school teachers from giving paid private tuition to their own students and licenses tuition centres; Kuwait and Saudi Arabia license centres and have periodically fined unlicensed home tutoring; Qatar requires centres to be licensed by the Ministry of Education. Online tuition from a company outside the country is a service bought from abroad and is not covered by these rules.
4Why is online tuition from India popular in the Gulf?
The time zone and the schools. The Gulf is 1.5 to 2.5 hours behind India, so a 5 pm class in Doha or Riyadh is 7:30 pm in India: an ordinary evening for the tutor, which means the same teacher all year. And most Indian children in the Gulf are in CBSE schools in sections of 35 to 45, which Indian teachers know exactly.
5What subjects do Gulf families take online tuition for?
CBSE maths and science from Class 6, physics, chemistry and maths in Classes 11 and 12 (often with JEE or NEET foundation), English, and for the British and IB schools, IGCSE and IB maths and sciences. Hindi for children growing up in English is a growing fourth.
