Algebra 2 has a reputation as the course where good math students suddenly get a C, and the reputation is earned. It is not that any single topic is beyond a 15-year-old. It is that there are a great many topics, they arrive fast, and every one of them assumes Algebra 1 is automatic. This page says exactly why it feels hard, where students fall, how it compares with the courses around it, and what to do about it.
Why Algebra 2 feels harder than everything before it
1. It uses Algebra 1 at speed. Factoring, exponent rules, solving equations and working with fractions are not taught again; they are used inside every problem. A skill that was right four times in five in Algebra 1 fails once in every five uses, and an Algebra 2 problem uses it three times.
2. It is many subjects, not one. Algebra 1 develops one idea for a year. Algebra 2 is a sequence of separate units that barely talk to each other: polynomials, then rational functions, then radicals, then exponentials and logarithms, then complex numbers, then sequences, often trigonometry and probability as well. Just as one unit makes sense, the next begins.
3. Functions become the main object. Until now a letter was a number to find. Now f(x) is a thing in itself, to be shifted, stretched, combined, inverted and graphed. Students who still think of x as "the answer" struggle with every unit after the first.
4. New kinds of number appear. Logarithms and imaginary numbers are the first objects in school math that cannot be pictured as a quantity. They have to be understood through their rules, and that is a new way of learning.
5. It moves fast. The course has to fit all of this into a year, so there is rarely time to recover from a bad week.
None of these is talent. All of them are fixable, and the fix is specific.
The six topics where students fall
| Topic | Why it hurts | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Factoring and polynomials | Factoring must be automatic and now includes cubes, grouping and more than two terms | Ten factoring questions a day until they are quick |
| Rational expressions | Fractions with letters: adding, simplifying, solving; every arithmetic weakness with fractions reappears | Fraction arithmetic first, then the same steps with letters |
| Radicals and rational exponents | Rules for roots and fractional powers are new and easily mixed up | One table of exponent rules, learned cold, used daily |
| Exponentials and logarithms | A logarithm is an exponent, and most students never hear that sentence | "log base b of x is the power you raise b to, to get x", said aloud until it is obvious |
| Complex numbers | i is an unfamiliar idea, and the arithmetic is fiddly | Treat i like a letter with one extra rule: i² = ā1 |
| Functions: transformations, composition, inverses | Needs the idea of a function as an object | Graph every function; say what each change does to the picture |
Most struggling students are stuck on one or two rows, not all six. Finding which two is the job of the first week of help.
How it compares
| Compared with | Harder or easier? |
|---|---|
| Algebra 1 | Harder: faster, more topics, Algebra 1 assumed |
| Geometry | Harder for most; easier for students who disliked proofs |
| Pre-Calculus | Similar, and Pre-Calculus repeats much of it; students who understood Algebra 2 find Pre-Calculus familiar |
| College algebra | College algebra is roughly Algebra 2 again, faster and without the trigonometry |
| Calculus | Calculus has harder ideas but fewer of them; most calculus errors are Algebra 2 errors |
Where the courses sit in the sequence, and when each is taken, is in what grade do you take Algebra 1. How much Algebra 2 matters later is in is calculus hard.
A readiness check
No calculator, ten minutes. These are the Algebra 1 skills Algebra 2 uses every day.
- Factor x² ā 5x ā 14
- Factor 4x² ā 9
- Solve 2x² + 7x = 4
- Simplify (x³)² Ā· xā»ā“
- Simplify (3/x) + (2/x²) as one fraction
- Solve 3(x ā 2) = 5x + 8
- Find the slope and y-intercept of 4x ā 2y = 6
- If f(x) = x² ā 3x, find f(ā2)
- Solve the system: y = 2x ā 1 and 3x + y = 9
- Write ā50 in simplest form
Answers: 1) (x ā 7)(x + 2) 2) (2x ā 3)(2x + 3) 3) x = ½ or x = ā4 4) x² 5) (3x + 2)/x² 6) x = ā7 7) slope 2, intercept ā3 8) 10 9) x = 2, y = 3 10) 5ā2.
Nine or ten quickly: you are ready, and Algebra 2 will be work rather than a wall. Six to eight: a month on the ones you missed, before or alongside the course. Five or fewer: the problem is Algebra 1, and why am I bad at algebra shows how to find and fix it.
Honors or regular?
Honors Algebra 2 covers the same topics faster and deeper, often adding trigonometry, and leads naturally to Pre-Calculus honors and AP Calculus. Take it if Algebra 1 and Geometry came easily. If they did not, regular Algebra 2 done well is the better choice: the gap between a C in honors and an A in regular is not in your favour, and regular Algebra 2 followed by Pre-Calculus still reaches calculus in senior year.
A plan to pass it well
- Fix Algebra 1 first. The month before the course, or the first month of it: factoring, exponent rules, fractions with letters, solving equations.
- Twenty minutes every day, not two hours on Sunday. Algebra 2 skills become automatic only by spaced practice.
- Keep a one-page rule sheet for each unit: exponent rules, log rules, the quadratic formula, the transformations. Rewrite it from memory once a week.
- Graph everything. Every function in the course has a shape. A student who can sketch it understands the algebra attached to it.
- Write every step, and check. Substitute the answer back. Algebra 2 is the course where unchecked work costs the most.
- Get help in the first month a unit goes wrong, not at the end of the semester. A unit missed in Algebra 2 does not come back.
Where to get help
A 1-on-1 online Algebra 2 class with a tutor who holds a master's in mathematics: the readiness check in the first class, the two or three weak Algebra 1 skills fixed first, then the course a unit ahead of school, with every line of working read. Also for honors Algebra 2, Integrated Math 3 and college algebra. The free 30-minute first class is a real lesson on this week's homework.
