INVALSI explained for Indian parents: what the tests in classe 2, classe 5 and terza media measure, what they do not count for, and the dates

INVALSI explained for Indian parents comes down to one unfamiliar idea: a national test that the child must sit, that the school takes seriously, and that produces no mark on the report. Families from India, where a test is either graded or pointless, find that hard to place. This post explains which classes sit the Italian national tests, what is in the papers, where the results go, why the terza media round is compulsory and still does not change the exam mark, the 2026 dates, and how to prepare the maths so that it helps rather than frightens.

What INVALSI is

INVALSI is the national institute that evaluates the Italian school system, and its "prove", the tests, are sat every spring by every child in certain classes. The purpose is to measure schools and the system against national standards, not to grade the child, which is why the results are handled the way they are. The tests exist in Italian, maths and, from classe 5, English, and they follow the national curriculum rather than the school's own textbook, so they are the one moment in the Italian primary years when a child from India is measured against the whole country rather than against the class.

Who sits it, and what is in it

The Italian paper is reading comprehension, with texts and multiple-choice or short-answer questions, plus grammar. For a child in the first two years in Italy it is a test of Italian, not of reading, and the school knows it.

The maths paper covers the four INVALSI areas: numbers, space and figures, relations and functions, data and forecasts. The questions are short, mixed, often in a real context, with a diagram or a table to read, and they ask the child to explain a step as often as to compute one. It is closer to the Dutch or the IB style than to an Indian test, and the child who knows the maths but reads the Italian slowly runs out of time. The English paper, in classe 5 and terza media, tests reading and listening at the levels the curriculum sets, A1 in classe 5 and A2 in terza media. For an Indian child it is the easiest morning of the year, and it is worth knowing that the English certificate level at terza media is the one place the Italian system records, in writing, that your child's English is above the class.

Where the results go

In the primaria the results go to the school as class data, anonymised, and the school uses them to see where it stands against the national average and where its teaching needs work. Individual results are not given to families, do not appear on the pagella and do not affect anything about the child's year. A school may tell you informally how the class did; it will not tell you your child's score, because it is not designed to.

In terza media the test is a requirement for admission to the esame di terza media, so the child must sit it, but the score does not enter the exam mark, which is built from the three years and the exam papers. Instead the child receives a certificate of competences with the INVALSI levels in Italian, maths and English, which goes with the diploma and which some licei look at. The 2026 dates

Primaria, on paper, in class: classe 5 English on Tuesday 5 May, classe 2 and classe 5 Italian on Wednesday 6 May, classe 2 and classe 5 maths on Thursday 7 May 2026. Terza media, on computer: between 8 and 30 April 2026, with each school setting its own days inside that window; a sample of schools sits it on fixed days in the second week of April. The 2027 calendar is published by INVALSI in the autumn and almost always falls in the same weeks, the first days of May for the primaria and the month of April for terza media. The school communicates its own days through the registro elettronico a few weeks before.

What to do about it, by class

Classe 2 (age 7). Nothing beyond what the school does. The teacher will run a practice paper so the format is not a surprise, and the child's Italian, a year or two into the country, will decide the Italian paper whatever anyone does. Do not add pressure to a 7-year-old for a test nobody will ever show you.

Classe 5 (age 10). Two things are worth a few evenings. The English paper, which the child will find easy, but the listening format with its audio and its answer sheet is new, and one practice paper removes the surprise. And the maths paper's style: short questions in context with a diagram, the reasoning written in a sentence, the Italian words for the four areas. Past papers are public on the INVALSI site; two of them, done slowly with the words translated, is enough.

Terza media (age 13). This one deserves a term. The maths paper is in the style the liceo will use and the certificate follows the child, and, more importantly, the same spring holds the esame di terza media, so the preparation for both is one piece of work: the four areas of the INVALSI maths, the four problems of the exam paper, and the Italian words that carry them. Past papers from the last four years, one a fortnight from January, timed, with the wrong answers sorted into "did not know the maths", "did not read the Italian" and "ran out of time". For a child from India the third and second piles are usually the tall ones, and both are fixable.

What INVALSI is not

It is not a ranking, it is not an entrance test, and it is not a thing the teacher will punish or reward. Italian teachers have mixed feelings about it, and some tell the class so. Do not let the school's tone decide yours: for a 13-year-old from India, the maths paper is a free, national, honest measure of where they stand against Italian children in the Italian style, and the English certificate is a written proof of an advantage. Use both.
