"Edexcel IGCSE grade boundaries 2025" is searched twice a year: in August and January when results come out, and all through the spring by students marking mocks and trying to turn a mark into a grade. Pearson publishes the boundaries as one PDF per series with hundreds of rows, which is accurate and unreadable. This page gives the June 2025 boundaries for the main subjects in one table each, what the R papers are, how the boundaries are set, and how to use them with a mock, with a printable table.

Download the Edexcel IGCSE June 2025 grade boundaries table (PDF) (every main subject with the mark for each grade and the percentage, the R papers, and a mock-mark worksheet; two pages, free).

The figures below are from Pearson's "Grade boundaries, June 2025, International GCSE" document, subject (cash-in) level, standard papers unless stated. Boundaries are the minimum mark for the grade.

Mathematics

Subject and tier Papers Max 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Mathematics A (4MA1) Higher 1H, 2H 200 172 144 117 92 68 44 32
Mathematics A (4MA1) Higher, regional 1HR, 2HR 200 167 140 113 89 65 41 29
Mathematics A (4MA1) Foundation 1F, 2F 200 150 128 94 60 26
Mathematics A (4MA1) Foundation, regional 1FR, 2FR 200 144 122 88 54 20
Mathematics B (4MB1) 01, 02 300 255 216 178 143 108 74 57
Mathematics B (4MB1), regional 01R, 02R 300 237 196 155 127 99 72 58

Read the Higher row carefully: a grade 4 was 44 of 200, 22 percent, and a grade 9 was 172, 86 percent. That is the shape of a Higher tier paper everywhere: it is written to separate 7s, 8s and 9s, so the lower grades sit at low marks. A grade 3 is available on Higher (32) as a safety net; below it is unclassified, which is why a student likely to score under 60 is safer on Foundation, where a 5 is the top grade and needed 150.

Sciences

Subject Papers Max 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
Physics (4PH1) 1P, 2P 180 143 126 110 98 87 76 63 50 38
Chemistry (4CH1) 1C, 2C 180 151 134 117 104 91 79 62 45 29
Biology (4BI1) 1B, 2B 180 140 124 109 94 79 65 54 43 32

The regional papers: Physics 1PR/2PR 9 at 142 and 4 at 73; Chemistry 1CR/2CR 9 at 154 and 4 at 81; Biology 1BR/2BR 9 at 144 and 4 at 67.

Science Double Award (4SD0), papers 1B, 1C, 1P, out of 330, gives two grades: 9-9 at 257, 9-8 at 242, 8-8 at 227, 8-7 at 213, 7-7 at 199, 7-6 at 187, 6-6 at 176, 6-5 at 165, 5-5 at 154, 5-4 at 143, 4-4 at 132, 4-3 at 120, 3-3 at 108, 3-2 at 96, 2-2 at 84, 2-1 at 72, 1-1 at 61.

English

Subject Papers Max 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
English Language A (4EA1), examined route 01, 02 150 113 106 99 90 81 73 54 35 17
English Language A (4EA1), coursework route 01, 03 150 123 116 109 99 89 79 60 42 24
English Language B (4EB1) 01 100 69 64 59 56 53 50 37 25 13
English Literature (4ET1), examined route 01, 02 150 120 112 105 93 81 69 52 36 20
English Literature (4ET1), coursework route 01, 03 150 125 116 107 95 83 72 55 38 22

The coursework routes (paper 03 is the coursework unit) have higher boundaries because coursework marks run higher than exam marks; the standard is the same.

What the R papers are

Pearson sets a regional version of most papers so that a paper sat in one time zone is not seen before it is sat in another. The R papers are different questions at the same standard, with their own boundaries, which is why the two rows differ by a few marks. A school's region decides which version its candidates sit; a candidate never chooses, and the grades are equivalent.

How the boundaries are set, and why they move

Boundaries are set after the papers are marked, by senior examiners who look at scripts at the key grades against the previous years' standard, supported by statistics on the cohort. The aim is that a grade 7 in 2025 means the same as a grade 7 in 2024, so if a paper turns out harder, the boundaries drop. That is why the Mathematics A Higher 9 was 172 in June 2025 and a few marks different in other series, and why no one can give you "the" grade 9 percentage for a subject: it is set after the exam, not before. Boundaries for the October to November and January series are published with those results and are usually a few marks lower, because the paper is different and the cohort smaller.

How to use them with a mock

  1. Mark the mock with the real mark scheme (the examiner reports and mark schemes for every past paper are free on Pearson's site), strictly.
  2. Add the paper totals to the subject total (both papers for maths and sciences; the max mark in the tables).
  3. Read the total against the June 2025 row for the same tier and papers, allowing five marks either way.
  4. Within five marks of a boundary: on the line, and the next topic fixed decides it. Ten or more above: secure. Ten below: the grade below.
  5. For Mathematics A, the tier decision: a student scoring under about 60 of 200 on Higher mocks in the spring is safer on Foundation, where the same knowledge scores a 4 or 5 with room to spare.

The printable has the tables with a column for the mock marks.

Questions parents ask

1What were the Edexcel IGCSE maths grade boundaries in June 2025?
Mathematics A (4MA1) Higher, papers 1H and 2H, out of 200: grade 9 at 172, 8 at 144, 7 at 117, 6 at 92, 5 at 68, 4 at 44, 3 at 32. Foundation, papers 1F and 2F, out of 200: grade 5 at 150, 4 at 128, 3 at 94, 2 at 60, 1 at 26. The R papers (1HR/2HR, 1FR/2FR) had slightly different boundaries: Higher 9 at 167 and 4 at 41; Foundation 5 at 144 and 4 at 122.
2What percentage do you need for a grade 9 in Edexcel IGCSE?
It varies by subject and year. In June 2025 a 9 needed 86% in Mathematics A Higher (172 of 200), 79% in Physics (143 of 180), 84% in Chemistry (151 of 180), 78% in Biology (140 of 180), 75% in English Language A (113 of 150), 80% in English Literature (120 of 150), 88% in Computer Science (140 of 160) and 82% in History (98 of 120). The boundaries are set after each series so that the standard stays the same from year to year, so the percentage moves with the paper's difficulty.
3What are the R papers in Edexcel IGCSE grade boundaries?
Regional versions of the same paper, sat in a different time zone (so that a paper taken in Asia is not seen before it is sat in Europe), with their own boundaries set to the same standard. A candidate sits either the standard or the R version, decided by the school's region, and the grades are equivalent.
4When are the Edexcel IGCSE grade boundaries published?
On results day for each series: for the May to June series, in August (International GCSE results are usually released a day or two before the UK GCSE results day); for the October to November series, in January; for the January series, in March. Pearson publishes one PDF per series with every subject and paper combination.
5How do I predict my IGCSE grade from a mock?
Mark the mock with the real mark scheme, add the paper totals, and read the mark against the previous June's boundaries for the same tier and papers, allowing five marks either way, because boundaries move a few marks a year. A mark within five of a boundary is on the line; a mark ten above is secure. The printable has the June 2025 table and a space to write the mock marks against it.
